    Area Gulf Water Conditions

went about 20 miles off AMI this weekend in 70', bottom temp 74, visibility was quite good. I could see fish up to about 30 feet, could see large rocks/ledges nearly 50 feet away

Lobstering...."Giving Back" during the off season?

if i'm not mistaken theres some b***s*** law about it being illegal for recreational fishermen to take lobsters from anything not natural, that would include old traps, cement blocks, the thing above. I'm not saying I've followed that one to a T, but I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere (or...

    Dropped weight at depth

hmm, a good reason for steel doubles and a backplate? :) At the same time, remember if you have too much unditchable weight and your bcd/single bladder wing fails, you might not be able to get back UP... darned if you do, darned if you don't (not really, but sounds good)

The 2009 Baseball Smack Talk Thread

WOW, again WOW, GOOOO LANCERS (uhh, that's MCC for those who didn't know, I'd assume that would be most of you all out there). This totally made my day, thanks a bunch! Oh, and since nobody else has mentioned it, maybe a Rays repeat run at something better than last in the league?

What's the point of outlawing spearing freshwater gamefish?

my $0.02, in Florida we now have a whole lot of new laws regarding how you can fish for 'reef fish', basically snapper and grouper. You must use circle hooks, and you must have a dehooker and venter in the boat with you. Personally I gut hook just as many fish with circles as i ever did with...

Do You Like to Hook and Line Fish?

being a little bit of a warm water wuss (low 60's in my limit), the whole grouper being easy to catch closer to shore thing during the winter keeps me fishing from the surface, but then as spring rolls on, you either gotta make a long trip to do the hook and line thing or jump in with a gun, or...

    Snorkel vest/BC when skin diving?

liability for whatever boat you are going out on I would guess, insurance stuff :)

Do I really need AOW for diving with charters going to sites for depth below 60'?

well I was a "Junior Open Water Diver (must dive with certified adult)" for almost ten years, got it at 12 and didn't think sending the agency another 20 bucks to 'update' my card would make a difference in how I actually dove :). I broke that rule many many times if diving with buddies my own...

    going tech the wrong way

as far as learning more about it online and other sources, before I started my tech classes I did a lot of figuring-out-the-bookwork on my own. Now before i go any farther, I never did any deco, extended range, etc dives without certification, so don't crucify me! But learning the what's and...

Anyone want to dive Friday the 10th?

I heard that a front's moving through about Wednesday and it's gonna get cold, just what I was told. Won't do much to water temp, but if the air's cold and the water's a choppy mess, might be a lot of not fun... EDIT: Johnny Bravo, thanks a ton for that site, I'd always done the call the...

    Whats Your Weapon of Choice

if I'm diving, trying to shoot anything keeper gag and larger, I always grab the riffe. I believe it's a 51" competitor, but it's been quite a few years since it was new. But for snorkeling or shooting smaller stuff, the 42" Biller is more manageable...

    Freediver takes 12' Tiger Shark

hasn't this thread been closed in other sections before? I think I remember seeing it earlier and not being able to comment on how bada$$ it would be to take on a shark that big in the water, but I digress...

    Losters and Crabs Feel Pain

Makes sense, same with deer and other land-type game. Can't say I've tasted a difference, maybe I just need to experiment a little more and see where it goes...:D

    Missing Zip-Tie = drowning?

This happened to me with a set of doubles during a class. Was breathing fine out of the long hose, shut off the isolator and that post and switched to the short hose, simulating a burst disk or freeflow reg or what have you. Apparently the reg on the short hose had lost its zip tie somehow (I...

OK, 'fess up.... the Dark Side of Solo...

Jorgie, my first car, and no, not a 93-98 model :(. Got a truck just in time for gas prices to go over $2 a gallon a couple years ago, but it pulls the boat! The name kinda stuck online and I'm sure scubasteve has been taken a hundred times over, especially on a scuba forum...

    Area Gulf Water Conditions

two more weeks...two more weeks... sucks huh? Anyways, dove 20-something off LBK, depth was 87 feet, vis a little short of 20'. My computer said temp was 60F at the bottom, depth finder saying as high as 70 on the surface (sunny day). Two thermoclines, deeper one less drastic than shallower...

Sarasota / Tampa / Venice area Top 10 Dive Sites?

never heard of this one, how far north or south of Bradenton is it, and what's the depth? Or possibly a PM of coordinates, if it's not too bold to ask? :D

OK, 'fess up.... the Dark Side of Solo...

never entered the water solo yet, but one a$$hat I dive with regularly loses me on more than half the dives I've done with him, so many times I come out of the water solo. From these experiences, I determined I need to be completely self-sufficient with people like him, basically being a 'solo...

Why not 60% O2 for prof during OW?

I was hoping someone would finally point this out. I for one, and I believe I'm not alone here, would much rather deal with DCS than Oxygen toxicity (of course I would like to never encounter either...). But seriously, your choices in the situation you've presented are: A) higher nitrogen...
