Best place(s) to dive in the US?

I will parrot a bunch of other divers in saying if you want warm clear water...the keys, nice reefs, and challenging wrecks if you desire. North Carolina...I love the diving out of Morehead City, great wrecks, LOTS of sand tiger sharks, and unfortunately, but stll beautiful...lionfish. Now that...

    Brand Quality?

Sherwood makes good gear( I like the Avid), ScubaPro, and Aqualung have been around a long time, and are committed to making quality products and good service. I would suggest talking to your dive shop, and see if they will let you "test dive" a couple of different combos in the pool to see what...

Best type of fins for current

I enjoy using my Aqulung slingshots, because they can act like a stiff blade in current by adjusting the band, or on a drift dive, set them looser to keep from fatiguing my legs

cylinder band weights on Oceanic Islander

You want enough ditchable to become positively bouyant, I generally use 28 lbs with my drysuit, and I put 18 split between the ditchable pouches and 10 split in the trim pockets

    types of BC's

The Zuma is a lightweight travel BCD and I would recommend something with more lift and built a little tougher for great lakes diving. I dive a back inflate, I love how I get horizontal trim with it, but a jacket is little easier to float in at the surface. You are going to have a bunch of...

Going to Haigh Quarry for checkouts! (can anyone give me an overview)

If you are doing your open water, chances are you will be walking in on the road, and staying on the north side of the road. The rock crusher holds a lot of fish including 2 ginormous crappies and occasionally a tiger muskie of about 40". Visibility can be good...20-30' OR it can be awful 6"-3'...

Whats the prob w/split fins again?

That is not from split fins, it is from facing up under a girl doing the splits, unless you have an air2, ajacket BCD, a yellow snorkel and a spare air, in which case then you are correct.

Not Maldives Scuba Diving Target Clientele

Fascinating pics of Blue Ring Octopi :D BTW I am not target clientele of Maldives Scuba Diving Ltd. either, too many other great places to dive MUCH closer to me.

    Managing the addiction.

Good Plan, at least you have a spouse who dives, dive vacations become a real balancing act with a non diving spouse, and can be frustrating when you start yearning to be under that wonderfully beckoning glistening surface every time you are on the beach looking out to the water, and the DTs...

First Open Water dive went awesome!!

I have locked my keys in my truck 3-4 times out at dive sites, luckily they were close enough to bring me the extra set of keys, except once...and the top of the passenger door is still a little bent from it :dork2:

    Best buddy check mnemonic device?

Lynne, You are a very knowledgable diver, and I usually enjoy your posts, BUT not everyone needs to dive with a bp/w setup, or in heavy jet fins, so my point to all DIR divers in this thread was lighten up and let the jacket bcd divers have fun with what they learned in their o/w class. I...

    Best buddy check mnemonic device?

The problem with mnemonics is that they support the "going through the motions"-mentality instead of actually consciously doing the checks and understanding why they're done. generalization that doesn't apply to all who use mnemonics. Since all our club rigs are identical (BP/W) and almost...

    Insta-Buddies

If I am paired with someone I don't regularly dive with, I make sure I understand how his gear works, and make sure he knows how mine works. He is my alternate air source and I his, so knowing if he has an airsource, or alternate, how long has it been since he did an air share drill, am I...

    Backplate/Wing and the 4WD vehicle.

Kingpatzer put it very well, the car analogy kind of withers as there are more specialized types of cars than 2wd, 4wd, and OFF ROAD vehicles. I drive a 4wd Colorado pickup, which is it... a 4wd car, or a hard core off road vehicle, and while the 73 Roadrunner I drag raced was certainly 2wd, to...
