13 year old and Padi JOW cert

I teach open water to a lot of kids, and they are told and told again during class, if they don't understand a word to tell me so I can make sure they understand. The biggest problem I have with the younger kids(10-12) is that on the quizzes or the exam, when they read the first right answer...

First Dive / Training (Am I wrong? Or, is the instructor crazy?)

Some of the skills on confined water #1 are required to be done in water shallow enough to stand in, anything else is a standards violation, period. I start teaching buoyancy right from the start of confined water, and teach using the low pressure inflator for small adjustments before their...

    Nitrox table vs computer question

Actually, that is incorrect, you can order crew packs with tables instead of the ERDPml, even though our store uses the ERDPml, I teach the tables also, because when they take EAN they will know how to use tables, and be ahead of the curve.

    Completed AOW this weekend.

Congratulations! Navigation can be challenging, but the worse the viz, the more you learn to trust the compass. I tell students that because we don't have good viz, it will make them better because they have to trust the compass.

Time between confined and open water dives?

You do have 1 year after taking confined and classroom to do your open water dives, if it going to be a length of time between, I will take students back in the pool for a skills review, before doing the open water dives.

    My mind plays tricks...

Hyperlordosis (over arching of the back) could be causing everything but the itching. Do you itch in a trilam drysuit as well as in a wetsuit? Fresh or salt water? Weight belt or integrated weights?

What do you think about Advanced Open Water Diver Certification?

No, O/W students are taught to plan and execute dives to 60' and told deeper requires further training.

DM ? what's the role of a Dive master

When I teach a DM is my extra eyes and hands to lend assistance to students when they need it. When I am on vacation, I expect a thorough briefing and don't touch my gear. That earns you your tip. I explain to the DM that I am taking pictures just let me do my thing, promise will not stay in...

    Backplates are backplates????

My DiveRite plate has the Transplate harness system with weight integration, Rec EXP wing and an STA, while the STA isn't necessary, it makes it easier to put together with the Scubapro tank straps. My Hollis plate has an Apex wing and a harness I wove from bulk webbing. A grommet kit from...

    Diving without a buddy?

After teaching all day, I love grabbing my doubles and splashing alone. It is a great way to unwind, but I will say, when students are gone, and we all want to do a fun dive, the instructors will dive as a group, and it is a great way to unwind also. We will play... hide a hotdog in a BCD, get a...

What do you think of dive clubs?

Not necessarily a bad thing. Our shop asked me to start a dive club last November, it has a bunch of wonderful, fun active divers. Club members get discounts on classes, club prices for dive boat charters. 4 of the store's instructors are in the club, so the club is having an education night in...

Critical Accident Rescues/Incidents - How many involvements have you had?

Have assisted in 3 rescue incidents, unfortunately 2 were fatal, 1 being a 16 year old boy scout. I will agree that when operators know your dive experience, they will tend to put newer divers with you as your buddy.
