Never say Never (12 dives later)

You should be proud of yourself! Keep diving, practicing skills, as buoyancy becomes automatic, you will find you go slower. A lot of new divers use speed to help control buoyancy, as comfort level increases, speed will decrease.

    Tech help down to 3

Aqualung are diaphragm regulators. The Legend LX for the longest time had the easiest work of breathing to 300', you are right definitely not worth the money.

    Apeks regs, halcyon hoses?

I dive a lot more than 2-3 times a year, just because you don't like the Legend doesn't make it junk. I think With the oring problems I have seen on HOG regulators they should be banned from being made, but just because I think so, doesn't make it right. I have even had my Legend LX supreme...

    Tech help down to 3

I have a buddy diving a pair of Extremes, he loves them. Although on our dive he did complain about some breathing wet at about 40'. We weren't going real deep, just doing some skills practice. I checked out Hog when I was putting my doubles together, after researching(though I do take Internet...

Instructors That Teach Students Using BP/W

I use bp/w, and when fitting a customer I show my rec setup as an example. I do teach with students in jackets. Why? The same reason I still teach weight belt even though PADI doesn't require it. Before I get flamed, read the revisions in the o/w standards, it now reads "weight system" not...

    Nitrox qualifications

It does taste different! 32% is cherry flavored...mmm. Seriously, tables still come in the nitrox book, and I teach them. I also have them bring their computers to class to make sure they know how to change from air to nitrox, and set the proper nitrox blend.

Divers: Watch where you attach your deco

With no penetration, it makes no sense to me to drop your stage bottles, I was taught to keep my stages with me, other than during penetration. BTW, we were told not to penetrate the the U352, as it is a war grave.

    Closing in on 100

Coming up on 600, and trying to figure out what to do, October in the Midwest is not conducive to not wearing thermal protection. Probably hover upside down with my usual slate written with what dive number it is.

    Interesting gear setup

+1 on the pony, could be argon inflation system, though that would be a big bottle for argon

Switching regs from one cylinder to another U/W?

Aqualung regs with the acd should stay dry and save the SPG. I would still service it after the dive.

A drag issue : to bungee wings or not to bungee

I dive double HP100s on the plate, and clipped for stages, my 60# Apeks wing works perfect. My single wing is a DR travel EXP, clipped to the plate. As I have said before, my gear doesn't have to be perfect, it has to be perfect for me. So, if bungees wings are perfect for YOU, then dive them...

    Buoyancy problems !!

I agree doing a buoyancy check whenever you change equipment. Light feet in a drysuit, there are a couple of things you can do, negative fins, gaitors(not my preference) or get in a pool and practice horizontal trim.

Dive ops on the big island.

Kona Honu divers, staff was friendly, knowledgable and boats run very professionally.

    Observations - "I don't know"

When asked about gear I will answer with " This is what I use" or "I have found this works best for me". I dive a bp/ w, but in my opinion it is not always the best option for everyone. One of the best divers I know, who owns bp/ w(2), side mount equipment and surprisingly, spends more time...

    Loose dip tube in tank??

Hmmm.... Sounds like you should be alright unless your name is Bill. I don't like diving with equipment I know has a problem, doesn't mean it will be an issue, but it might. When you fix it, drain the air real slow, or you will get "chocolate" swirls inside a steel tank. They make pressure...

Best way to clean/store gear for a while after trip?

I use wetsuit shampoo and Mirazyme by McNett to clean & deodorize wetsuits. Regulator and computers get soaked, patted and allowed to completely air dry before stored in my regulator bag. Mask, fin and snorkel get soaked and allowed to air dry before being stored. BCD gets soaked in BCD cleaner...

    "Rescue Diver" - Your experiences?

1 didn't make it, 1 was talking when the paramedics showed up. Ironically, I was teaching rescue the day of the 70 year old that made it, reinforced to my students about always being prepared.

    "Rescue Diver" - Your experiences?

Like Lynne, I started reflecting on what in water emergencies I have dealt with while diving. I have dealt with a failed close second stage, a broken fin strap, an out of air emergency by a newer diver, a 400 yd tired diver tow(not practice) of a man who had me by 10" and 100 lbs. who got...

    Course starter

I would find an instructor that is patient, and willing to take his time to make sure you master mask skills. This is probably the most common hurdle people have during their class. I have a game we play in the pool, and with a struggling student and by the end of the game they don't even...

    Which PADI OW Crewpak?

We use the ERDPml crew pack but I still teach tables also, I have taught the computer class, and we keep a supply of inexpensive but decent computers in stock. Even in the computer class, I teach the tables. You will need a logbook, and either tables, ERDPml, or a computer(owned or rented).
