    First time underwater

Finally got my EPL-1 and EPT housing underwater along with the 2 YS-01 srobes set ttl, and I am really happy with the results! By the second dive was shooting in full manual and only blew out the first 2 pics. I will be posting a few of my best shots from our local quarry here. Time to get on...

    embarassing nOOb question re:strobes

make sure but you can probably attach a tray under the camera housing with a finger wheel screw, and Sea and Sea makes a strobe mask kit designed to cover your in camera flash and work with their fiber optic cable, and fire the strobe through their fiber optic cable. I use 2 YS-01 with my camera...

Haigh Quarry Accident on Oct 2, 2010

He was a 16 year old boyscout, had dove Haigh a couple of other times this summer, and when found there was still 900psi in the tank. One reason that it took so long to find him, when we questioned his group prior to splashing, they pointed to an area about 200' from where he was found. we and...

Opinions on buying new vs. used equipment?

Why does it have to be "either or", to a new diver, I would recommend a new regulator and gauges, and a bottom timer of some sort...watch or computer. You want to buy a good used BC, used wetsuit someone may have peed a lot in, I say go for it. Like Bob, I buy new, sell the old to cut the cost...

Please tell me Who was at fault?

To quote a briefing before a drift dive off of Ft. Lauderdale..."The flagman is the only one who can not get lost, as he is with the flag, where you are supposed to be, if you are not the flagman, it is YOUR responsibilty to stay with the flagman". Now that said, no blame, and agree with the...

    Lost Confidence in diving

I hate to harp on the regs, but it sounds like the IP is set too high... especially on the LX Supremes, I dive that regulator under ice, and have shared air with it under ice with no free flow issues, check the IP on the regs, or the gauge that checked them when they were serviced. I am glad...

    Is advanced certification necessary?

Advanced open water doesn't make you an advanced diver, only diving experience can do that, what advanced open water class does, is give you 5 dives with an instructor, 2 are required...deep and navigation, other 3 designed to give you a taste of what different types of diving is like. I will...

    Thumbing the dive

The idea came from the picture of Jacque Cousteau from the cover of his book, changed up, stylized and put inside the globe.

    Need buoyancy tips

There has been a lot of great advice given, I would like to add, if doing a flutter kick, make sure you are kicking as much as possible from your hips with legs as straight as possible, so youren't kicking yourself up, second, do a proper weight check in your normal exposure protection and...

Accident at Haigh this past weekend....

Lee, thanks for the update, it is sad but does highlight the need for regular medical checkups especially for us "older" divers. Thanks for the praise on the rescue efforts, it really does show how training takes over, no thinking, just acting and everyone involved grabbed a role and performed...

Accident at Haigh this past weekend....

I heard while we were working on him, someone say that he said 3 times he couldn't breathe then went limp, he was unresponsive and had vomitus on his face when we got to him and starting towing him, we never got a pulse or unassisted breath from him, so the heart attack supposition isn't...

Accident at Haigh this past weekend....

Mike, 2 of the other rescuers were the chief of paramedics for Chicago, and and a Chicago firefighter/emt that I just certified open water, and they were outstanding, he was getting rescue breaths starting in the water as we were taking up to the beach, and that and CPR didn't miss a beat until...

Accident at Haigh this past weekend....

As one of the rescuers, I was informed that he did not survive. My condolences and prayers go out to his family. I was not informed on C.O.D., but all his equipment was functioning properly, I was with Dave from DUI when the preliminary check was documented by him.

What to do when an instructor is out of line?

Well having finally read all the posts, and some things stand out, first, if it happened the way the OP wrote it, the instructor deserves at a minimum, stern discipline, you don't ever use that kind of language with a student. Second, he stuck to his guns on not mentioning the shop or...

What to do when an instructor is out of line?

Buddy teams staying together, and the fact that your buddy is your emergancy air source is taught in PADI O/W classes, and I go over it, as well as seperation procedures on EVERY dive brief. If hotpuppy didn't get a debrief as required, that is a standards violation, as PADI requires it on all...

    types of BC's

Both are good BCDs but I have dove a Knighthawk for the last 4 years, and I still would not trade it, so see if you can get in the pool with both and see which one YOU like more.

    where to buy equipment

IMHO, I buy life support and equipment where fit is critical at the LDS. lights, cameras, signaling devices, clips, etc. I buy where I get the best deal
