    Rental tanks in Greece

hey folks, heading to Greece on Sunday. What kind of tank can I expect at a rental shop. I'd like to get an understanding of the tanks characteristics (volume, pressure, steel vs. Aluminum) for weighting and for dive planning calculations. Leaving my Bp/w and drysuit home and renting a BCD and...

    GTA Shore dives

Humber Bay West is Toronto's dive location, situated a mile or so West of Humber river (~35 minutes from downtown core). Visibility this time of year typically ranges anywhere from a few feet to 20-30 feet. Shore dive with depth to 20' within a few minutes going to about 45'. Can dive off the...

    Mask fit/seal

Great post by fmerkel, above. Basically, when trying on a new mask, don't put on and inhale to see if it fits. Rather, stand in front of a mirror, move the mask toward your face ( straps out of the way), and as the mask approaches face, check that top, bottom, and sides of mask (just) make...

    matching (APEKS) reg for doubles

Hi Folks, I have two APEKS regs: XTX 200 and and XTX 50 (DST). Does anyone foresee any issues if I use these two first stages for doubles (with only the DST rotating)? Put another way, are their more advantages to having a set of regs that have both sides rotating? Was thinking of getting the...

    Trim weight where?

I assume you are in a wet suit? Try borrowing a heavier set of fins from a dive partner (Jet fins, Hollis F1's, etc.). Concentrate on keeping your head/chin up and arms up but not too far out in front will help to shift weight back.

    Freezing My Ass Off...

To OP, given it sounds like you might stay with the wetsuit, consider investing in a thick hood if you don't have one. I recently switched from a 5/7mm aqualung to a 5/10mm waterproof, and it seems much warmer (dry suit in both instances). If and when you switch to a dry suit, the hood is...

    Where are your car keys?

Assuming one has an electronic key fob, has anyone heard of issues with the fob if brought to depth (dry suit so stays dry--just wondering if pressure would effect the electronics). I have to replace my battery about once a year--actually, it seems to go on the fritz a few months after I replace...

    Critique A Beginners Dive Profile

Jax, you mentioned you try to do a 1 minute stop on ascent every 10 feet (following GUE). Is this not a 30 second stop and a 30 second slide to the next shallower 10 foot stop (albeit, GUE's SOP is a bit more specific: 30ft/min until reach 50% of depth, then 10ft/min, as outlined above; with a...

    Fredericton, Nb Area Dive

Hi...travelling to Fredericton on Friday for 1 week. Wondering if there is any local diving this time of year. Might be able to get away one day, farther afield say about 1.5-2 hours (away). If any one has knowledge (or is looking for a buddy), let me know.

    Sinking Feet

All bets are off when you switch to a dry suit. You will need more lead; you may not be as feet heavy. Still useful practice to sort out your bouancy and trim now, without wetsuit/dry suit; then again once you get your dry suit. It takes some people one dive to sort out trim and others a handful...

    Sinking Feet

Tank height: Make sure your tank is not too low. I follow the guideline that I should be able to reach back and conduct a flow check on the valve (head leaning back toward tank valve; elbow in toward side of head). If tank placed higher, should bring top part of body down. Arms and legs. If...

Water Docs Film Festival - Toronto - Ontario - Canada

It was a nice film, both in the artistic side of the structures and the environmental side of the algae forming on the structures months later.

Scubatec BCD - tank slip off bcd

As long as the back of the bcd has a second set of slots, you should be able to purchase a second camband from your local shop or at on online retailer. (Just double check the width of camband fits size of slot).

Scubatec BCD - tank slip off bcd

In addition to the steps mentioned above (that is, check assembly/ threading of cam strap, wet the strap before putting on tank), you could also consider adding a second cam strap. You will still need to sort out issue with first strap, however, a second strap functions to secure tank very tight...

    Choosing a Reg

Before purchasing the hoses for your regs, consider what agency you might be diving with in the future (PADI, GUE, etc). Some agencies might advise rubber over miflex. You mentioned the longhose on one set up. I like rubber, particularly, if hose is a) long and b) going around my neck...

    Cold-water weighting vs. warm water

Steve_c, good analogy with the lift bag vs. suit. Gives me something to frame the issue in a tangible way. Will add more weight above my baseline next time I'm out experimenting with loft.

    Cold-water weighting vs. warm water

I see you point tbone. Assume thermals are same just loft of thermals different. Given were are likely only talking about a pound or three, perhaps a real-life test is most appropriate.

    Cold-water weighting vs. warm water

If one is properly weighted for summer/pool diving in a dry suit, any suggestions on how much weight to add for cold water diving (just above zero) to compensate for more air in suit to stay warm. I realize buoyancy is same in warm and cold water. Reality is that to stay warm in really cold...
