    Lake / River Diving Equipment

Hey, Jax! One of the responses I get when I tell someone new here that I dive is "I thought only people living near warm water could dive?" I live in the desert; we have lots of divers here. Once you find a local shop you'll be amazed at how many divers there are, and your only problem will be...

    sea-sickness remedy?

Scubadude, I'd like to try the ginger pills, as a more natural remedy. Where can you get them?

    sea-sickness remedy?

Have pills such as Dramamine worked for you in the past? If so, you can get generic Bonine at Target (possibly other places) for much lower prices than namebrand. Just ask at the pharmacy, no prescription needed. I'm not usually prone, but take it anyway. On rare occasions, when I've felt a...

    Disappointing start

Don't give up. You've said you were going to give it your best shot; it sounds as if you really want to succeed. Going to another shop and paying for another class may or may not be affordable; if you can, you might be better served by a LDS more interested in training good divers than selling...

Bad viz, we got lost, need advice

Even in clear water, navigation is a vital skill (personal experience!). Get in touch with your LDS, and ask about a class in navigation. PADI has a nav specialty, but just doing the classwork and basic exercises isn't enough. Get with an experienced instructor, and really learn to navigate...

    Who is responsible for what?

One of the best posts I've seen. My teenagers and I were products of a weekend certification course, and it wasn't until I began working as a DM that I really saw how training should be done. As much as I wanted that cert (patience isn't my strong suit...) we would have been better served by a...

What equipment you can take on open water dives?

Bermuda does not forbid the use of gloves or appropriate dive knives. Some Carribbean area, such as Cozumel and Grand Cayman don't allow gloves, as they want divers to keep their hands off the coral. Just remember not to have your dive knife in your carry-on!

Spotted Eagle Ray that actually changes colors!

Just a followup to my post a few days ago. Yes, the Eagle Ray is wonderful! If John ever expands his line to include other fish, eels, etc., I'll be in line to purchase them. It was easy to hang (not heavy), and if hung near a fan, it rotates and changes color constantly. By the way...

Looking for SeaSoft dealers in AZ or LA area

I am interested in SeaSoft BCs, and am trying to find a dealer in the Phx metro area or even in the southern LA area (I'm over there a lot). I tried calling the home office, and they were unable to really help; seems their computer system didn't have a listing by area. I was interested in...

    Mask removal help

Several posters have offered excellent ways to become comfortable with mask clearing; except for pinching your nose, they are all good ways to overcome your anxiety. One instructor I worked with (once the class became comfortable with stationary mask clearing) would accompany each diver around...

    Diver Death in Cayman

I am so sorry about the loss of your friend. No one can know what you are going through, and to have a tragedy impact a sport that you obviously love is devastating. It sounds as is there was some very poor judgement on the part of the DM on this dive, and possibly overconfidence on the part...

    Tattoo advice

Oh, yeah, one other thing (also personal experience). If you have a tan in the area where the ink is going to go, it won't take. The ink will peel off as it heals. So keep the area out of the sun for a couple of weeks prior to getting the tat. As I said, sad personal experience...............

    Tattoo advice

Congrats on the weight loss! If you want some new art, go for it. I will tell you (from personal experience), the ankle is very sensitive. Don't have one on the foot, but I hear it really hurts (no fat under the skin). The wrist/forearm doesn't hurt, and can be covered by sleeves if necessary...

    John Blazy is amazing!

Just received my Eagle Ray from John Blazy (Blazinator), and it is gorgeous! I can't do justice with my photography, so I recommend a visit to his website. It really changes colors in the sunlight, and picks up colors from its surroundings (the walls where it's hung are light purple). A real...

That DiveCaddy carry on bag? any reviews?

I haven't seen the Dive Caddy in person, as it were, but check out the website's video. It's kinda long, but very comprehensive, and it looks as if it really works. The demonstration includes all standard equipment for a 6-ft man, including Atomic splits, which are longer than Apollos. I'll...

Water entry for those with bad legs

I'm with Psychocabbage; I have bad knees and often have my gear put in for me after I get in (I have integrated weights). And when shore diving, I also float my gear out and put it on in the water. Not only is this easier on knees, back, etc., but it's a great way to practice gear handling...

    Cold, Sore, Exhausted

Don't be worried about being colder than other divers; some of us just get cold more easily (I always seem to be wearing more than most people). In Bermuda in August, I was wearing a 3mm fullsuit; some of the other divers around me were in shorts and tshirt......... You might want to check out...

    Hello

Aascubagirl has some great info! Just be glad you're starting as a young man. You have a lifetime of wonderful experiences ahead of you. Pay attention to the safety training, relax, and enjoy every minute. There's no such thing as a bad dive.

A different twist on an old question

As you can see, the "which agency" question always opens up a real can of worms. Seriously, even though you don't necessarily want to hear that the instructor makes the difference, it's true. My teenagers and I were certified over a year ago; now I'm a (very) junior divemaster for a different...

    Male Dive Buddies

I am a married female with a non-diving, non-travelling husband. He gave me nothing but encouragement when I decided to get certified along with our teenagers. Same when I decided to become a divemaster. Sometimes I dive with one of the kids; I go on trips with my dive shop; occasionally I'll go...
