    Question about hood

I suppose I should weigh in on the hood question (yes, wear one) - but I really wanted to say how much I envy you being able to do your checkout dives at Catalina. Try not to let the great diving distract you from doing your skills........... sigh

    I love diving, period.

Are you male or female? Any special interests (tech, cave, etc.)? Might help people make good suggestions.

At what point did you decide to buy your own tanks?

About the time I decided to start DM training. Just so convenient to call someone up (or grab one of my kids) and head for the lake without having to go rent tanks. And nice to not have to stop there the day of the dive to drop them off.

    Ankle weights

My daughter also had the floaty feet problem (made safety stops interesting...). She tried heavier fins (my Apollos) - problem solved. Ankle weights are really hard to use; they don't stay in place and, as mentioned, make finning harder. See if your instructor will let you try some heavier fins.

Seeking waterproof/underwater fanny pack/bag/belt pack for snorkeling

I've used the Splash Caddy before; never had a problem. It's available through several outlets; just Google it.

While on Vacation, Why don't u like other people changin your tank?

As my kids are fond of telling me, I'm "old," so will gladly accept help hauling tanks when it's available. I also gladly accept assistance hauling my ancient bod up the ladder with my gear on (bad knees). I do prefer to set up my own gear; it's part of the fun of being a diver. I like...

    self-catering accommodations?

I agree with NJ; if you can, dive with as many different ops as you can. You'll be glad. If you rent scooters, Oleander has the most rental operations around the island, and will be most convenient. Also, buy a 7-day ferry pass; you'll get around faster. A scooter takes at least an hour to...

    self-catering accommodations?

I'm pretty familiar with the locations of dive ops and markets. Are you planning on renting a scooter? It's a challenge to carry groceries on one if you haven't tried it before. Perhaps you could let me know (pm if you like) what properties interest you, or you could tell me what you...

PADI OW Certified (my experiences) - Catalina Island - Scubaluv

Congrats on the OW cert! And good for you for trying California for your first ocean dives. So many people I meet here in AZ won't go there because "it's cold." All I can say is they're missing some world-class diving. I must admit, though, I prefer it in the summer (I get cold, and haven't...

Wetsuit for the chubby but avg ht woman

Try Bare. They have sizes for women who aren't supermodels (like me.....). I had the same problem. Women's rentals stop at about size 13 (even my daughter, who's tall, had a challenge with them), and men's - forget it. Getting into a 7mm is already "fun," and the ones I could get into were...

    Secrets of Bermuda Revealed.....

A few other interesting facts: Although Bermuda currency is tied to the US dollar, they do indeed have their own currency. Their coins are beautiful, and have cultural significance. Most stores and other commercial enterprises are closed on Sunday. The law was changed within the last few...

    Dive booties

Have you looked at SeaSoft Sunrays? The largest I've seen on their website is a 13/14, so I don't know if it would fit. I love mine; they're even comfortable wearing around between dives, and I have real problem feet.
