Another newb who might be around. Niihau is a heck of a ride, and the dives tend not to be beginner dives. :zen:

I will probably still be around, and I could use a newbie dive pal. Remind me when you get closer. :zen:

    Tips for dealing with surge?

Then why do they teach it? Besides "that's what the book says to do." Is it like math class where they teach you the hard way before they show you the easy way? :zen:

Math question - am I an air hog?

Fear, apprehension, whatever you want to call it. Surging waves can be scary if you aren't familiar. I suspect you used less air because you had one more dive worth of experience in waves. PPB deep inhales shouldn't make THAT much difference since you would have had to do a deep exhale...

    My Kauai AOW experience

On behalf of the State of Hawaii and the Forces of Nature,:zap: I would like to apologize for the poor diving conditions during your AOW and most of the weather :rain: when you weren't diving. I hope you were able to enjoy some of the many other wonders that Kauai offers, regardless of the...

    First Post, Equipment Questions

In addition to the "LDS loyalty" thing, there is also the idea of renting, maybe even from a few different LDS's, for a while and trying different pieces of equipment out. That way you can see what kinds of things YOU like. :zen:

    scared of water

:shocked2: :scared: Pool lessons, then swim a lot, then snorkel and swim a lot, THEN maybe take scuba lessons. You realize diving is essentially swimming with a can of air strapped to you, and most diving takes place "in the deep end?" :zen:

    My Kauai AOW experience

That sucks. Too bad about the surge. The open ocean is a bit different than lakes, and the way the shoreline is there, it kind of funnels in to make the surge worse. I think a good portion of the 22lbs was from "surge nerves" though. And you probably should have insisted on your own wetsuit...

    Who carries a Safety Tube?

Slight hijack: Why is it that if you search Amazon for safety sausage, a bunch of $20-30 things comes back, but if you search surface marker buoy, a bunch of $30-60 things comes back? I though they were the same. I have the PADI one that came with my AOW book. Stitches look fragile. :zen:

    Thinking about a 60 foot snorkel….

Wait wait wait. What if there was some way to pull vacuum on the outside of your chest. :crazyeye: I propose some sort of hard-shell inverse pressure dry suit for your torso. Hopefully it would be balanced and well controlled so it doesnt create a giant torso hickie on the surface. :zen:

    Boat crew setting kit up

:hijack: Yeah, what is with those guys? Is there some ancient tradition of kings not removing paper towels from their dispensers or waving their hands in front of motion detector soap dispensers? They creep me out too. :zen:

    Dry Suit?

Is there anyplace in Hawaii that can teach me how to use a dry suit? I know it will probably be hot and uncomfortable, but I would rather get exposed to it someplace close to home rather than using up a day flipping over and bobbing up and down on a mainland trip. Nevermind why I would want to...

The most dangerous thing about scuba is...

Poor instruction? Weighting/Buoyancy? OOA? Getting bent? Cold water? Freeflow? Too much anxiety? Unexpected BC inflation? Nope, its driving!!! Sitting in traffic on the way to work, my mind starts drifting to websites with at all the cool gear to buy and I start analyzing the last...

Recent OOA incident in Cozumel, and questions for the experts

Without really knowing the situation and the conversations that took place, would guess that a good chunk of the fault lies with their instructor. New divers should be scared to drift dive that deep right out of class, either from the OW book, the instructor, or both. Did the instructor say...
