just as cold in a drysuit

Excellent points. Hoods that have made a difference for me are DUI and Viking. (The DUI edges out slightly better because of the awesome venting.) Not sure about drygloves, although never tried them myself. Knew too many people who told me their hands actually got colder in drygloves. Seen...

just as cold in a drysuit

I regularly dive in 35 deg water and I'm not a 'warm' person; I get cold rather easily. It's GOT to be 400G thinsulate, at least. You get to a point where you've piled on so much lead you just can't believe you could possibly need any more underwear, but you've got to go for it anyway...

Boot or Sock for full foot fin

Mares makes my wet boot. Nice & supportive, warm, and fairly tough.

    Please agree with me here.

Go for the book. Figuring out how to suck and blow at the same time could have major implications for scuba. Not to mention doing income tax.

Just happened to notice it randomly. Lovely shot, great composition.

    Team ethos and recreational diving

I feel the answer is quite simple: If you're more than a breath away from your buddy, you're diving solo. Are you trained and equipped to dive solo? Is your buddy? The rest of the stuff about groups and whatever seems pretty extraneous.

    bouyancy control tip

Actually, me too. If you're wearing something black, like a glove or a sleeve, it helps to hold it out and look at it as a background; makes the little buggers visible. I was once accused of taking recreational substances because I spent an entire safety stop apparently fascinated by my own...

    Buying a New Digital SLR

I would echo these guys - leaning towards the Canon guys; once you shoot through one of those 'L' lenses you'll be ruined for life - but just out of curiosity, what are some of the reasons you're upgrading? That could make the choice easier.

One thing, though: don't submit your work in full res. If they want that, they gotta pay. :)

Is there some reason I suddenly stopped getting Email notifications to subscribed threads? I don't think I changed anything in my profile settings. TIA chris

    Digital photo downloads

Get yerself an Apacer "Disk Steno". Self-contained burner. Plug your memory card into it, slide in a blank CD and you're there. One of the best investments I've made since I went digital. If you'd like to spend a little more, Epson's coming out with an awesome HD-based photo-wallet thing...

would like tips on air consumption

This is a very good one, thanks. Come to think of it, here's an excercise that has been somewhat helpful for me: -Put your finger over the bottom of one nostril just heavily enough to prevent air from flowing through it -Inhale through the other nostril as FAR as you can, taking at...

Do you ever hold you breath?

You never heard of a swell? I suppose you advocate breath-holding? And somehow, it's all my fault for being a PADI instructor. What an utter waste of time<plonk>

Do you ever hold you breath?

    In confined water, perhaps.

Do you ever hold you breath?

True, but how likely is not ever rising in the water column?

would like tips on air consumption

I don't think 40 minutes on an 80 is necessarily bad, depending on depth, currents and so on. It may sound silly, but the best advice I can give is watch a fish; total economy of movement. Just drift unless there's a reason to do otherwise. You may need to think down through your entire...
