In my case, I started out listening to the good people of ScubaBoard. I bought a Veo 250 thinking that AI was a waste of money. I made about 20 dives with it until I determined I wanted something AI. Again I listened to Scubaboard and feared the hoseless AI would surely fail soon and often so...
LOL
while that maybe true it wouldn't be Scubaboard if the question was answered with no other discussion. Check the threads asking on for opinions on BCDs fins regulators etc.
we we all like to offer up an opinion on what we have, don't have, like and dislike. This won't be the last thread...
While some may have those opinions, they are not universal.
I have yet to experience a reliability issue. Others have had the same experience as I have.
I do not use a spg backup, others see value in using an spg as a backup.
The cost has more to do with perceived value. For some the value is...
So backup your AI or not. It's a personal preference. I don't see the need to backup AI for the diving I do. The article clearly states steer by wire is here, it is here today, it is available now.
The possibility of failure is there, it is also there for an SPG. Given a set of...
When the ability to do so arrives, yes. I also think there will be, as in airliners, backups.
With the strides in technology giving birth to such things as traction control, ABS, electronic fuel injection etc I don't think electronic steering is that far off.
For technical diving I can see your point. For recreational diving I would like AI to your example of farm equipment.
BTW Like Pete, I don't have an spg as backup, at least not mounted. I do keep one in the bag, on the boat.
Probably, most of the cars controls are already electronically controlled.
We load up in an airplane, hurtle through the air a high speed and all of those controls on the big airliners are electronic.
AWAP beat me to it.
And if your transmitter goes bad, you can score a hose and an spg literally at any dive shop in the world.
Richard beat me to it.
Or you can carry it one in your bag on the boat.
It's a matter of personal preference. If you want to back it up with an SPG nobody will stop you. If you don't find value in having your pressure displayed with other dive information then use the SPG. Computers have improved, so has AI and the transmitters. I am perfectly comfortable with...
I have a datamask and an OC1. I have 1 transmitter mounted. The transmitter serial number is entered in both computers. They both sync to the same transmitter. I have a spare transmitter and I have a SPG in the dive bag just in case. So far I have not had any failures.
I got the datamask...
"Because I want it" is a justifiable argument, just not to you. You needn't understand it, it isn't about you. It isn't always about cost, it isn't your money. It isn't about your view of the functionality it's about what a person is looking for which may differ from what you want.
5 or 6...
Never seen that either. The transmitters all have unique serial numbers and if that particular serial number is not listed in the computers set up it will not recognize it.
As pointed out if there is a backup SPG I can't see why people dislike them.
That said, I am strictly a recreational diver and have used a wireless AI computer on 80% of my almost 200 dives. I have never had a problem with synching up or a dropped signal on any of my dives. I often hear of...
I think it is fine looking watch. The watch looks quite functional and could be used as a back up if you are diving tables. I like it. But then I like watches.
I count them and like MMM I also try to figure out some way to distinguish them from the others underwater. Fins, different colors on their wetsuits or board shorts or booties, something different.
I was on the Cayman Aggressor last week of July last year. We left the dock and spent the first night off of Grand Cayman, The next day we did the Kittiwake and headed for Little Cayman. We spent the rest of the 10 day voyage diving BBW with the exception 2 dives off of Brac. We returned to...
