    Equipment

To add to the confusion, some people incorrectly refer to the entire rig, 1st stage, both seconds, console as an octopus. I've seen a number of used regs advertised this way.

Best place to reef dive in the keys ?

Another vote for Molasses. A lot of pelagic life comes in there. We saw an eagle ray and a couple of sharks. Visibility was about 35 ft when we were there in late June and that was considered poor. Reef Adventures, the shop which operates from within Pennekamp had a good deal on a three trip...

Just Finished my Confined Water class

Contacts and my eyes don't get along so I use a prescription mask. I wear bifocals on land but find that the magnification from the water is sufficient for me to read my gauges without the inserts. Most people I've talked to use contacts. A prescription mask will run about double the price of of...

    Mini Season Toll

I wonder how many of these incidents involve alcohol. With the party atmosphere a couple of beers in the diver and/or boater can really up the odds of an accident.

Kinda dissapointed after first Confined Water Dive

The best advice I got from my instructor was don't do anything until you're ready to. If your instructor gives you the signal to do a skill and you need a few breaths to compose yourself, do so. Give him a wait signal if you need to. I was having some trouble inhaling water up my nose when...

Skydiving or SCUBA Which is safer?

I think people must be nuts to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. On the other hand, I consider breathing underwater to be a perfectly reasonable activity so what do I know?

Breathing techniques for low air consumption

I noticed that too. I tried some of the techniques here on the first couple of dives and decided not to try them again until I'm more comfortable. Right now, when I think about breathing it's mostly for buoyancy control and hovering. Gear is pretty about as streamlined streamlined as it can...

Breathing techniques for low air consumption

Nope, no one at all (384 views). Know any ways to slow down a teenager that don't involve physical damage? Saying "Slow down" sure doesn't work.

No, You said it online. That's worse!:shocked2:

Breathing techniques for low air consumption

Since my 16 yr old daughter is getting irritated that her old man is cutting short her dives, it's hard to relax and not worry about it. She also tends to swim faster so I have to keep up. I've considered larger tanks but I won't be able to get them when I travel so that's not much help. I'm...

What do you do/don't do on your Open Water Dives?

We did an OW CESA. That must vary according to instructor and probably conditions. I think that was great to practice although it did give me a mild reverse block.

What do you do/don't do on your Open Water Dives?

If you're getting certified on vacation, I think they make an effort for you to see some of the sights as well. Relax and enjoy it. It opens a whole new world.

Test For Volunteer Diver at National Aquarium in Baltimore

Me too. It sounds great but I could see my boss's face when I ask for every other Tuesday off for the next year. Thanks for the info.

What do you do/don't do on your Open Water Dives?

For my class, BCD and weight removal was done only on the surface, not submerged (we did submerged in the pool). The only gear removal we did underwater was complete mask removal, replace and clear. Mask floods and clears were actually the toughest part for a lot of us. We were in a quarry and...

Brand new diver..he wants to start AOW...is it a bad idea?

Our first trip after OW was to have fun and get comfortable (6 dives). I may well do AOW before I take another. I particularly want more navigation and buoyancy training. I don't see a whole lot of benefit to waiting, although the point is well taken that this won't make me an "advanced diver"...

Sounds cool. Maybe next year. How is that every other week commitment divided between weekends and weekdays?

Diving Lake Thoreau in Reston, VA

I did my OW at Millbrook and I'm not anxious to return. It's probably OK to train and check out equipment but it has low viz and there's not a whole lot there. If I'm going to rent a wet suit and tanks, I think I'd go to Dutch Springs or Rawlings. They're a little further but I've heard they're...

    Resort Discover Scuba Debate

The problems pointed out aren't with the program as designed, it's with shops and instructors that cut corners or go beyond the limits. When the program is carried out described above, it is safe and has introduced a large number of people to the sport. These shops and instructors need to be...

    Resort Discover Scuba Debate

I had a great experience on a resort dive and it's the primary reason I'm certified now. As others have said, it was basically first class, first pool, then OW. The skills taught were very basic and were admittedly the minimum for a safe dive: mask clearing, equalization, regulator recovery...

    Best beginner dives

I second Molasses Reef. We dove it a couple of weeks ago as part of our first dive trip after OW. We saw several sharks and an Eagle Ray. We didn't see any eels but they're there. Tons of life everywhere, I'd go back in a heartbeat. In fact, since we still have a day left on our three day cards...
