    AOW instructors

I did my AOW at Bananarama on West Bay. I can categorically state that they were NOT the type of instructors that KellyAsh describes above. Yes, they are easy-going (as in patient) but not laxidaisical (sp?). I would highly recommend them. I did my AOW with Martin (who is now running Sun...

Article: Dive dry with dr. Bill # 580: "bombs" and "basses"

So the Goliath Grouper and the Giant Sea Bass are the same species?

Article: Dive dry with dr. Bill # 580: "bombs" and "basses"

I had thought "jewfish" was also the common name for the Goliath Grouper. Is this the case of common names being applies to multiple species? Are there even other species labeled as "jewfish"? Carl

how to properly log a dive?

First, you should be able to download the Puck to a computer. You will need the interface cable and that didn't come with the Puck if I recall correctly (got mine a few years ago.) It's a Drak USB interface cable. I've had dive shops ask to see my log book when I first dive with them. After the...

Help me decide Roatan West Bay or Cozumel?

Been to both. My preference for diving is Roatan. The resorts I saw are bigger at Coz and likely better food at the resorts than Roatan resorts. But Roatan has some great places to eat. On West Bay, Beachers has the best coconut shrimp. The Thai place next to the West Bay Mall (small strip mall...

    West Bay Dive shop recommendation

I recommend Bananarama. I did my AOW and Rescue with them (different trips) and did not regret it. Marco was the Rescue instructor ... highly recommended!! Also, I found doing the eLearning ahead of time a great benefit even though the cost was a bit more in total. If you're only staying a...

    Occidental Dive Shop

Spent about ten days at Occidental the first part of Feb. Dove a couple dozen times using ProDive. Overall good experience. The sinking of Tres Hermanos occurred on my last day there and one of my acquaintances was on the boat. It was not their usual boat but one of the overflow or standby boats...

    Dive Boat Sank???

That's not the way it is currently configured. The chair is not there and there are benches on the sides and in the middle for tanks/divers.

    Dive Boat Sank???

Yes. What I was told by one of the divers was that there was miscommunication and he stayed down vs coming up to report that they were on the right spot.

    Dive Boat Sank???

I am contradicting your previous post. The conditions were not as you are assuming. They were not typical conditions as previous posts have stated and from my experience the previous week or the two days following. I attribute the failure, based on the accounts told to me and supplemented by...

    Dive Boat Sank???

What I was told directly from someone who was on the boat was that there were three DMs with four divers with each DM. Allowing for a minor numerical error, eleven reported divers from other sources here, that's consistent. They were to dive Punta Sur listed as a more experienced dive so maybe...

    Dive Boat Sank???

That's absolutely not true. The issue here is one of seamanship. Know your vessel and the seas. The boats are absolutely fine for those seas but there are other ways to manage a rear pickup without excessive backing. A couple boats used a current line. They came up along side approaching into...

    First trip to Coz

No. We were outside there in Columbia Deep for at least one, maybe two dives. The dive op didn't seem to have Columbia Shallows on the menu. I'll have to ask for it if I go back that way. I like the idea of the magnifying glass!! I'll have to try it out!

    Dive Boat Sank???

More info ... Only the three DMs were in the water at the time due to some confusion about the dive site. The captain's GPS didn't have power (no batteries or dead batteries) so the DMs were looking for the dive site. As mentioned, there was much backing in the higher seas which got water over...

    First trip to Coz

A couple clarifications ... I don't mind drift diving and have done my fair share and have the skills. I just don't care for the same thing all the time and it makes it more difficult to get the macro stuff since you're zooming by so its hard to spot the smaller stuff. I did get some on the...

    Dive Boat Sank???

I'm not going to ask myself that since it didn't happen. I dove with the same op that afternoon. Many boats were out. The fleet was not grounded.

    First trip to Coz

Our first trip to Coz is winding down. Came down with a cold/ fever the night before the last day so had to cancel the diving. :-( Diving was good but all current, all the time, not my style. Current is not strong but doesn't help with finding the small stuff. Only been diving (not counting the...

Opinion about dive in Cozumel or Playa del Carmen

In Coz now on my first trip here. Diving is good. AOW not needed. Just let the dive op know what you would like to do or not do. I have not dove PDC but talking to those here that have indicated unanimously that Coz is better. Whether the "better" is worth the trip hassles, I don't know.

    Dive Boat Sank???

The boat was the 3 Hermanos taking folks down to Punta Sur from at least the Allegro and Grand. I wasn't on it but was diving with several folks who were and my afternoon dive was late as a result of the other ProDive boat going down to get the folks and gear. From what I was told from those in...
