I can't say that I've never collected a dead shell, but in general I maintain a hands off approach. I would never collect a living shell solely for the shell.
With a lot of the out of print books I've been looking for I've found that patience is the key. Just keep looking and eventually what you're looking for will pop up somewhere at a reasonable price. Half.com is new to me, but thriftbooks.com and sometimes eBay will produce results.

This is is similar to what we use except that the 3 fingers would be touching the underside of the flat hand. Signifying a 3 minute stop at the agreed depth (usually 15-20ft)
