How to get into Super Macro?

I use the Canon 60 mm macro lens a lot, and certainly it is the workhorse for macro. For super-macro, I add on the Nauticam SMC. It works fairly well, nice shots are possible. The main issue is that the working distance becomes very short, so you need a steady hand and a cooperative critter. I...

And what about the G7X ??

Scott Gietler has just written a nice review of this camera. Overall it seems quite positive. There are many good cameras to choose from these days, and this is one of them. Canon G7X review with macro & wet lens tests|Underwater Photography Guide

Feedback needed for Meikon, Nauticam, or Sea & Sea housing for Sony a6000?

Nauticam housings are great. The vacuum system is great. The negative pressure of the vacuum system also helps keep your housing closed. You certainly do not want to put positive pressure in your housing! SeaLife is a brand of camera (not housing) that I don't particularly recommend. I think...

And what about the G7X ??

Just for the benefit of others following this thread, lack of a hot shoe is actually a good thing for those of us who are using fibre-optic cables to trigger their strobes. I think most people starting out will more likely go that route rather than the old-school electric cables.

    G16 questions

Giffenk, I am a little puzzled by your post and have to respectfully disagree. I would regard the G16 as a perfect starter camera. At the very minimum, you want your starter camera to shoot well in manual, and the G16 fits the bill perfectly. With at least one external strobe, one will be...

    Hollis Prism2

I was certified on the Prism 2 in September, and so far I am loving it! I already have about 60 dives on it. The only minor issue I have had is that the BCD is leaking a bit, where the inflator hose screws in to the wing. Other than that, it has been great. I think it has been put together with...

    Two weeks - Macro Photography

Anilao hands down has the best macro in the Philippines, and arguably the best (or at least is a very close 2nd) for macro in the world. if you have 2 weeks, you could do 1 week in Anilao and 1 week somewhere else. If you don't want to spend too much time in transfer, PG would be a good...

Going to Atlantis Resort on Dumagette in early March

Bring the 3 mm suit. You still might get chilly if you do a lot of dives per day, and especially if you do night dives, so I would add either a hood or a hooded vest. You will have a great time! cheers!

And what about the G7X ??

To Girellator, I think the issue, at least in North America, is that the housings are not quite out yet, but I think very soon, so it is just a matter of people getting their housings and trying them out. I think this camera certainly has promise! For those who want something that has already...

Worries about ferry from Cebu to Southern Leyte in January

Hi Prairiedog, I went to Southern Leyte last year just 2 weeks after the big typhoon. Our original plan was to fly into Tacloban and get a private van down to Southern Leyte, but we had to change our plans because of all the damage in Tacloban. So we flew into Cebu instead and took the Gabisan...

    Beginner Diving in Philippines?

I would not be concerned at all about a notion that certain destinations cater more to advanced divers. This is not the case in my experience. All the destinations you mention are perfectly capable of catering to beginner/intermediate divers such as yourself. All the places you mentioned would...

Kona Trip Photos with Canon G16

Really, really good shots, especially for a relatively new diver. Especially the wide-angle dolphins, rays, and turtle shots are outstanding. I am guessing you must have been an experienced topside photographer before learning how to dive?

    Liveaboard in the Philippines?

One nice thing about Philippines is that you generally don't need a live-aboard to experience fantastic diving. With the exception of Tubattaha, pretty much everything else can be done land-based. So live-aboard is not necessary, especially if you like macro. Anilao, Dumaguete, Malapascua, etc...

    Anilao or Dumaguete/Dauin (in April)?

Yes, as FT mentioned, I am at Aiyanar resort in Anilao at this moment. Aiyanar is quite pricey, but also very nice! So if you have the budget for higher end resorts, go for it! The food is just ok, but the rooms and diving facilities are very nice. The only reason I booked here was to attend an...

    shooting macro with canon 60mm

I shoot full manual, ISO 200, usually 1/200 (max synch speed), and f 16-20 generally, to get more depth of field. For the smaller stuff, I stop down to f18-20, and if I have to back off on something bigger, I will open up to f14, or open more the more I back off. Strobes are generally half...

    High-end point and shoot options

Hi Dave, you are absolutely right that the key to getting much better shots is shooting in manual and getting strobes. The compacts are getting better all the time, narrowing the gap between SLR and compact image quality. Get a Canon G16, or S120, or the new G7x. Get a machined aluminum housing...

Meikon / Polaroid Canon T3i /T2i Housing Review

The prime lens will be sharper than the kit lens, but check the minimum focus distance. If it is 45 cm, that will you have you tearing your hair out in frustration underwater. The key to underwater photography, be it wide-angle or macro, is get close, then get closer. You could try putting a...

Meikon / Polaroid Canon T3i /T2i Housing Review

I would be leery about buying an SLR housing without interchangeable ports. Most kit lens aren't that great underwater. They can shoot wide-angle and they can shoot macro, but typically neither very well. I am sure the T2/T3i would shoot nice macro with the 60 mm macro lens, and nice wide-angle...

    Sony A 6000 in Bali

Great shot Bill! How would you compare the 50 mm Zeiss to the Canon 60 mm? (Or the Canon 100 mm if you have ever used it!). I am trying to figure out what mirrorless camera/lens combo would give the best possible macro, without having to go full SLR. My loyalty to Canon is starting to wane...
