I guess an agency that emphasizes all divers diving from the same standards and protocols should do a better job of updating changes to past students. Maybe they will do a better job of that... or maybe not. Im not sure what you are driving at with the silly question so I'll ignore it.

Just to be clear this was if you are using only one bottle in Tech 1 ranges. I have no idea what lost deco procedures for Tech 2 ranges are and i probably didnt explain it right :p

I guess that's what they are trying to address with the SOP doc. Maybe they will update it and add lost deco procedures....or maybe not.

Since the deep stops went from 10ft per min to 20ft per minute I think its almost a wash. I believe the thinking is that Tech 1 means newbie deco divers so have them plan min gas this way. Deploying the deco reg prior to switch depth was a big no no. I use to deploy on ascent from 60 to 70...

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I wanted to relay some things in the Tech 1 level that I just learned in my GUE Tech 1 class that kind of relates. Apparently some things changed recently and I dont know if the SOP doc is current but Gideon was in Florida before coming out to do the Tech 1...

    Rec to DIR

I was in the same boat as you a few years ago, I pretty much did what Lamont recommended. I was in a BP/W and long hose around dive 15 and basically went nitrox, SSI advance open water including nitrox and deep and then did stress and rescue. 100 dives later I finally got a chance to do...

    Cave diving in Hawaii?

The lava tube at three tables goes back about 200ft. It narrows to a point where it is no longer passable with doubles and from what I saw it appeared to continue to narrow to nothing. Apparently some open water certified divers did die in there a number of years ago.

    Growths on turtles?

Other then through mating I heard from a researcher that they suspect that cleaner fish could be acting as carriers. To your point PSI I also wonder if man made causes like pollutants might be making turtles more susceptible. Supposedly the juveniles in the outer islands don't have it and...

Bandit angelfish and other photos from last week.

That's the beauty of deep diving on Oahu :D You get to see more of the rare fish since the divers that catch them for the tropical fish business generally don't go that deep.

    Growths on turtles?

Its a herpes virus that is decimating the green sea turtles. The warts aren't deadly by themselves but the growths around the eyes and throat lead to vision and breathing problems which become fatal. It's sad when you see the young adults with a growth starting.

    Alladin Tec 2G

Hey, Seahound. Those in the DIR forum tend to not worry about gas functions on a dive computer since we only use it in gauge mode. For us seconds display and resettable average as a back up to our brains average tracking is the nice part about it. But yeah the button pushing sequence on the...

Its great. Has seconds display which is nice for deco and the resettable average depth is a nice feature when I remember to use it :( I went to it after having two vytecs display 10 feet deeper then it really was. Last one that went out on me happened on a deco dive. Not cool.

    Is the Superferry kaput?

The pressures put on by the anti-ferry crowd on Maui reminds me of the jerks with the "keep the north country, country" bumper stickers here on Oahu. Translated as I don't want development spoiling my view. I saw a funny bumper sticker that said. "keep the city getto, getto" That about sums...

    Kamaaina diver dives like mainlander

Rick he is telling you to switch regs! Here on Oahu we actually modify the reg switch hand gesture to use the index and little finger instead of the thumb and the little finger to avoid confusion since so many divers use the shaka underwater. And who says there are no area specific DIR rules!

LOL, Why is Alex's Old Boat Stuck up on the Beach?

Island divers maintains the Elysium now. They were keeping it at the docks but the property manager didn't want it there so the moored it in the bay. The boat came off the mooring and drifted onto the beach. The plan was to dig it out as much as possible and then wait for high tide. I don't...

    Hawaii Trip Report-Island Divers Rock!

Sorry I missed you two, Jo had me doing shallow water DM stuff for some new techies :( Maybe next time. Glad to see you had a good time, I was afraid diving off the Elysium might have made things less enjoyable.

Long hose primary now, BP/W later?

You can be firm on standards and protocols without using a two by four.

    Any GUE Locals on Oahu?

Hey Chris, I might be able to join you on a weekend charter when you are here. I generally dive with Island Divers. ScubaandDreams and Onfloat use to do shore dives every now and then so they are an option. Personally I hate shore diving unless its the north shore, id rather pay someone to...
