What would recommend as a path to Wreck Diving in the North East and Great Lakes?

I live in Indiana and dive year round, hitting the wrecks of the Great Lakes more than a time or two a year. Also frequent the quarries to stay up on skills. Currently adv nitrox/deco, but not all charters I hit are tech. Hit me up when you get to the Hoosier state and we'll work on getting you...

    2013 Tour de Cure

All, I figured I'm not above a little cyber begging. I'll be riding in the 2013 Tour de Cure for diabetes research on 8 June 2013 in Indianapolis, IN. I'm not looking for massive donations, If you've got a couple bucks and can sponsor me that would rule. If not thanks for looking. I've been...

Do I really need dive insurance and/or proof of a medical dive check up?

Question is can you afford treatment services for dive injury? Or, can you get arrangements made for evacuation as streamlined as DAN can? My brother was in a severe accident (not dive related) and the one hour helicopter ride alone was $18,000 dollars. Even with good insurance that covers all...

    Log book mockery?!

I'm not sure anyone mocks them. I think I tend to mock the gloom and doom 'you'll miss the dive of your life unless you have a paper log book' bs you see in those type of threads. I log my dives electronically because I'm a geek and 1s an 0s make way mor sense to me :)

    The elusive "PLUS" rating?

I was told locally (Indianapolis) that the issue is not how to calculate if the cylinder passes the '+', but that there is an additional qualification that must be submitted to the DOT to be capable of issuing a '+'. Since scuba cylinders are a very minimum piece of their business it is not...

    Deco Dives With Liberal Computers

Bottom line. A decent deco computer is going to cost about the fees of an Adv Nitrox/Deco class, and the instructor won't let you use the computer in class anyway, as you manually cut tables and execute your dive from those with a gauge and timing device. Go take a class and learn what you do...

    Is dive master worth it?

Reality is there are so many DMs because the typical life of an active DM is fairly short. One of two things happen. They either get tired of working for nothing and doing most of their diving in a pool or at 20' for 20 minutes so they quit, or they decide if they are going to commit to teaching...

If backplate/wing systems are so good, why do people sell them?

Yeah, And of all the dive boats and tech charters I've been on, I've seen zero people diving doubles with a jacket BC. That speaks volumes. Because you can shouldn't mean you should.....

New way to wear a BP/W

If backplate/wing systems are so good, why do people sell them?

I like a backplate more because I can use it on both rec and tech dives. I'm not in a rig I'm uncomfortable with at any time because single tank or double, I'm rigged the same. For less than 2 jacket BCs I have nearly unlimited configuration options to balance my rig. A BC is a divable piece of...

If backplate/wing systems are so good, why do people sell them?

Not sure you understand what you are talking about. New plates/wings are purchased to expand diving. A 50 lb wing used in doubles diving will taco a single tank like no other so usually divers opt for a lower lift wing, like 27-30 lb. of lift. By swapping out a wing for a couple hundred bucks...

Technical Diving Instructor Trainers - where, when & how?

I'll take the highly experienced tech diver as an instructor any day. PADI's TecRec isn't the only way to teach tech. Why are you limiting yourself to their programs?

    Is the paper logbook necessary?

I've been asked when my last dive was, when my last deep dive was, and when my last salt water dive was. Never been asked to produce a log for it. I did have to present a log book for my DM, but it was cursory at best. They looked to be sure I had 60 dives and moved on.... As I said, I carry my...

Have you used your dive knife?

I use mine almost every dive trip. I trim the 1" of nipple coming off my condom cath down to a size that the barb doesn't twist over and cause a blow off. Dive knifes....preventing wet drysuit underwear since 2007 (when I got my first pee valve).
