Article: How a Small Group of Instructors Spurred Reform in Scuba Instruction

Agree, nothing new here, GUE and UTD have always done it this way. I'm surprised its taken PADI this long or why they thought it was better to do on the knees.

    Just an observation

Nothing against Okies, I meant the dive population is probably relatively small compared to more coastal regions like San Diego. Here in San Diego there are easily 10 shops and several clubs pretty close by, if I don’t like a particular group or shop I can just move along. That may not be the...

La Jolla - harassment of wildlife

Well its certainly illegal - the rules at the cove concerning harassment are pretty clear. Unfortunately, I doubt much can be done. ---------- Post added August 4th, 2013 at 12:21 AM ---------- I did the same and made it clear in the comment section that it is illegal to harass wildlife...

Waivers for Clubs - How long can they be 'good' for?

Why do you charge for membership? I belong to a club called Power Scuba (Power Scuba (aka Scuba Diving in San Diego County) (La Jolla, CA) - Meetup) here in San Diego its free to join. We do wavers at the events.

    Just an observation

I think what you are seeing is specific to that dive shop. Divers and the sport of diving is so diverse I don't think you can generalize at all. Unfortunately, in Oklahoma you may be pretty limited in finding the right crowd.

Once you go Nitrox, do you use "standard" air?

Lots of opinions on this, I personally don't worry about it. Beware, some dive shops that don't use the E filter will scrape your O2 clean marking if they fill it.

Tell me about a dive log.

There are no specifics on how its suppose to be - pretty much your personal preference. I think of it more as a diary than a log. I record the usual information and make notes on anything interesting. I also note equipment changes and any training. My objective is to be able to use it as a...

Why have a zipper on a wing, if you can't........ (warning a longish rant follows)

I have a DSS 30 lb horseshoe with a zipper. I got a pinch flat, I sent it in to DSS and they turned it around very fast - I don't think they had the wing for more than a day. It spent more time in the mail than the shop. Tobin, it was nice meeting you at the SCUBA show in Long Beach.

My new setup. Advice, comments and concerns wanted.

I have the same set up, I really like my DSS set up. I agree the LPI corrugated hose seems short at first. I have a small piece of bungie right where my left d-ring is that I use to hold it inlace, if the hose was longer I would be concerned that it would dangle to much. The long hose comes...

Free Tank from Buddy, need help

Take it to a shop that actually does the hydro on sight, they can take a look and let you know if needs a tumble, if the valve needs work and anything else. They should be able to tell pretty quick if it can be but into service and how much and then you can decide if its worth it. I picked up...

Sea Quest Balance BCD with Aqua Lung Airsource - $300

I agree (of course) both the BC and the Air-2 work great, the bc has no leaks, the weight pockets click in fine and the Air-2 works just like it should. Good breather even at depth - 80 feet or so not much different than my primary. Although I really like the Balance BC, I have recently...

Sea Quest Balance BCD with Aqua Lung Airsource - $300

This Balance back inflate BC has about 50 dives on it and is about 2 years old - i bought it brand new at Sport Chalet. The Aqua Lung Airsource is only about a year old and has maybe 20 dives on it, I also bought it new. The BCD also comes with the standard inflater with hose, Airsource with...

    Support your local Dive Operators

I've always wanted to dive Lake Travis as i'm Austin from time to time. Lake Travis Scuba doesn't post prices on their website, what do they charge for a two tank dive? Do you usually do shore dives or boat?
