Uncontrolled ascent - almost what to do?

If the weighting was correct for the first dives, and you became buoyant beyond control on the second check your low pressure inflators. There may be a slight leak with the BC or Drysuit. Dumping from valves will help, but disconnect if you have to. You may have been task loaded and not...

Proposed interactive shark diving in the Caymans

The difficulty with having the shark feed is that Cayman reefs are close to shore. Usually less than 1/4 mile out. Short of blue water shark dives out in the abyss, there really isn't any place to go. I think its more exciting to come across them without the bait of food, but that's my...

Proposed interactive shark diving in the Caymans

Terrible idea. However, it will take the attention away from the Pier dredge and the Turtle farm. The Moray feeding at Stingray didn't work, so why would Shark feeding be any different? Cheers

Explosion injures Chinese diver - Korea

For cutting metal, wouldn't they use Thermite instead of acetylene? I'm not a welder, but always thought oxy-acetylene was more difficult to use as a cutting instrument and produced hydrogen gas that could collect and explode. Of course I may be way wrong. Cheers

Out of 27 diving fatalties since 2010, 17 have been foreign tourists

With such a disproportionate number of deaths, could it help to make tourist divers do a mandatory check out dive with a DM? I had to do one in Bonaire, years ago, and they give you a fancy little disk to put on your kit indicating you were good to go. It would have to be for a fee of...

    Week in Review 02/10/2015

Add Caymans attempt to keep Turtles in captivity 1,268 turtles died from illness at Turtle Farm in 2014 :: Cayman Compass I think it may be time to reevaluate the need for the turtle farm. There is more concern about wearing gloves in the Marine Park.

    Americans targeted at Owens Airport?

We have a liberal gun policy in the Metro area. Windsor is right across the river and I think they may have had one gun incident last year. I believe Detroit has one every hour. Canadians seem to have it right. This has nothing to do with Cayman., just stirring up the pot. Feel...

    Snorkeling in 1000 feet

I'm from the midwest and like to eat the smaller fish. Less mushy and the meat is cleaner. I would rather leave the large adult breeders, better for the long term maintenance of the fisheries. Cheers

    Diver etiquette

I read that fruits release ethylene gas that causes the ripening. Bananas must release more ethylene. Found it on the interweb, so it must be true.

    regulator hose leak

A suggestion would be to invest in a torque wrench for proper tightening. I am not a fan of the hand tight then a 1/16 of a turn, or whatever archaic way they use to use. I think we started to use torque values post WW2. An improperly torqued bolt or nut will either back out or...

Nice Little Article About Cayman Brac

I've met a couple grumps on Brac, but they were from the States.

First timer Caribbean, where to go

An added benefit to Brac is the unlimited shore diving, awesome rock climbing and a quick flight to Cuba for a couple days of sight seeing. Cheers

    common cold

Yesterday I did 2 deeper colder water(48 degrees)dives with a cold. We stayed above 80 feet. I felt good enough to go, could clear ears, and used some afrin nose spray. Dives went well until I finished the second dive. I was wore out. Normally I climb out without taking the gear off...

Very near miss - panic and hyperventilation at 70 feet

On the bottom, pull a weight out a or two and establish bouyency. On the surface, dump all the weights if you feel like you are sinking into the abyss. We've all been there. I just messed a Brac dive up and it was in the most ideal conditions. I'll blame mine on age. Keep diving and...

DCI and hyperbaric chamber experience Cozumel

Cigautera poisoning will give the same symptoms. Everything from a positive Rhomberg , and other neurological symptoms to paralysis. I have noticed in Cayman the fresh fish of the day is anything they catch. Don't know if you had any fresh seafood, but most people do when they dive the...

    Americans targeted at Owens Airport?

It's a live round from carry on luggage. Who else handles the carry on luggage other than the x ray machine operators.

    Know Cayman rules and regulations...

Don't understand the complaints. Diving Caymans is awesome, rules help maintain a healthy reef. Conch populations are increasing, staghorn coral is on the rebound and the walls are awesome. Go Cayman

Major Freak Out - What should I have done differently?

There are 2 small swim through-es at Bloody Bay wall, I believe Mixing-bowl,and they refer to the short one as the swim through for chickens. I pass on doing any of them. Swim through-es are, I guess, a change of pace to make the dives more fun. I think they are an unnecessary risk...

In your Opinion, what are the responsibilities of a DM?

DM is responsible to get you to a site to dive. That's it. Learn how to dive and know your limits. We seem to have a culture of always having to depend on someone else and to blame if something doesn't go our way. Be responsible for your decisions and if you feel deficient, train to...

Major Freak Out - What should I have done differently?

Agree with Doc Harry^^ I will add, before Scubaboard I thought DM's gave a crap about the safety of the paid customer divers. We are referred to as cattle and should expect to be treated as such. Use a dive boat as a taxi and nothing more. Learn your equipment, dive a plan, communicate...
