Mares Puck Pro vs Suunto Zoop

I use the Zoop, and I don't use the buttons while diving. Display tells me everything I want to know during the dive. Otherwise I find it very intuitive to use. I don't like the feel of the buttons though. I think I would go for an Aladin 2G if I hadn't the Zoop already, as that uses...

    Awesome cuttlefish in Okinawa, Japan.

It says Sunabe in the video description :) I always enjoyed the dives at Sunabe, I think it's underrated. I plan to go back to Okinawa again for more diving too some time, though most likely not for another two years :(

    Getting ATM pesos in Manila..

I had no trouble getting money both at the airport and in Puerto Galera when I was there about a month ago (ATM in Sabang was offline). I had private transfer from Airport to Sabang (arriving at around 11pm in Sabang), but I have met people who did public bus and boat and had no trouble. Even...

btwn dives, do you leave your camera latched up in its housing?

Okay, I checked the values for an o-ring cross section of 0.139, a groove width of 0.136 and a groove height of 0.100. (By the way, all those values are imperial (inch), right?) If those values are correct and assuming no tolerances, then the fill rate is at 110%. And as I said, while rubber...

btwn dives, do you leave your camera latched up in its housing?

Please keep in mind, whatever is written in the o-ring manufacturers catalogues or ISO/DIN/JIS or whatever standard you want to look at, those are recommended values, for all sorts of applications and all sorts of conditions. 5.7% might be way lower than the recommended value, however, that...

How much lift does your wing have?

I use a DiveRite Travel wing (25lbs/11.3kg of lift) with SS Backplate. When diving 5mm and AL80 I use 2-2.5kg of extra weight (depending on my camera setup and my mood).

Issues with Canon S110 and Ikelite housing

The S110 will keep the white balance when you switch from Photo to Video. And you can test that right away, no need to be under water. When fully charged, my battery lasted for two full dives (in 26-27°C water), though I rarely shoot video. I also shut down my camera when I'm not taking pictures...

    Getting ATM pesos in Manila..

There are a few ATMs inside the airport, I was there about a month ago and got some money right there. I also got money from an ATM in PG, no problem, but the ATM in Sabang was offline during the whole time of my stay. There was a limit of 10000 PHP per single withdrawal, but I was able to...

btwn dives, do you leave your camera latched up in its housing?

The "inperceptiple" motion is no problem or danger to the seal. In terms of O-Ring design, this is a static seal. Also, the pressure change gradient is rather gentle. There are dynamic applications for O-Rings that are much, much more demanding in terms of tear and wear. And the maximum...

btwn dives, do you leave your camera latched up in its housing?

The o-ring just by itself will not deform at atmospheric pressure, but when it is installed in the housing and the housing is closed, it is squeezed, and that can deform the ring. It's a matter of time. That's why it is not recommended to store your housing closed with the o-ring installed...

    weight belt failure

Was that a new or used belt? And do you know which one it actually was (how many pockets)? There are some that have a max capacity of only 20lbs. To throw in another number, I am 5'9", about 170lbs, and with a 5mm suit, hood and gloves I use 5 kg of weight (including backplate) when diving a...

    Anyone located in Miyazaki?

Cool! I was wondering why there shouldn't be good diving east side of Kyushu when there is good diving west and south, and on the west side of Shikoku. And if you ride a bike, especially a dualsport, Kyushu is a great place to be in, too :)

    Anyone located in Miyazaki?

The people I dove with in Kumamoto all said that there is no good diving at the east coast of Kyushu. The shops in and around Kumamoto would all go to Amakusa, Kagoshima or Shikoku for diving. I personally never made it to Kagoshima, every time we wanted to go weather turned out to be bad, so...

    Formerly Seattle, now Japan!

Keramas are nice, but I also enjoyed the dives off the shore. Manza Dream Hole is nice, yes, found it a lot more interesting than Maeda Blue Cave. I got a stainless steel backplate and the Travel EXP wing. It's fine with 5mm wetsuit and al-tank, but with 3mm or steel tank (which some shops in...

Did you check out reef encounters yet? (japan-diver in this forum) I got my BP/W and regs from him, and you can do tech training with him, too. And welcome, by the way :)

    Anyone located in Miyazaki?

I used to be in Kumamoto-ken, but not anymore. Miyazaki-ken or Miyazaki-shi? If you are not too far in the south (or if you don't mind a a bit of driving), I can recommend a trip to Kashiwajima (柏島), Shikoku. Drive through the night to Saiki, leave the car, early morning ferry to...

Places with shallow, calm, easy dive sites in the PI?

Maybe they have more, but just not in service at the moment? At least when I was there last week they only had one, and that had some problem with one of the engines from time to time. Except Verde Island all the dive sites are so close that I didn't mind going by bangka.

Places with shallow, calm, easy dive sites in the PI?

True, they have one "speed boat" which you enter from the side, which is even easier than entering the bangka at the beach. They didn't use it for every dive, though maybe you could just stick to the dives with the speed boat. Sometimes they also use it for two groups at once, which can get a...

Anyone else Puerto Galera - Asia Divers Dec 29th - Jan 8th ?

So, I'm back from Sabang, and I am glad I went. The diving wasn't exceptionally great in my opinion, but it was far from bad. Had some really good muck dives and a very special midnight night dive. But it was the other divers I've had the honor meeting there and diving with, and the talks...
