Recommendation please to JR. OW dive training

It seems you are looking for a resort type destination during this period so Thailand, Philippines, Maldives, Bali, Malaysia are all nice places to visit during this period weather wise and diving conditions are favorable. It's really up to where you feel like vacationing as I'm sure you'll...

For warm water, aluminium or stainless steel plate?

A steel back plate is usually just under 3 Kg so based on how much weight you've said you're using, if you get the steel backplate you would require very little if any additional weight for the 2mm and a little more for the 5mm. Unless you are using a 15l steel cyclinder, then there won't be...

Yes indeed... thanks for adding the clarification.

    Mandatory tracking device for divers?

I like the idea. I see nothing wrong with the possibility of increasing the odds of a rescue or a recovery should something go wrong. I see it no different than carrying an SMB, strobe, horn, whistle, etc.. if one so chooses.

Wing Lift Vs Depth vs Amount of Bottles

Another thing to consider is how the ballast is distributed. Your wing should also be able to float your rig on the surface so if you're using v-weights or integrated pockets on your harness rather than a separate weight belt, you should take that into account.

    Mandatory tracking device for divers?

Perhaps one can consider that this would not be a mandatory device, but if one elects to use one there would be certain guidelines and stipulations for its use. An intentional false alarm for example would incur a penalty fee... (yes I know, how can you prove it was intentional?) Maybe the...

How often do you "Plan your dive, dive your plan"? Preliminary Survey Results

Speaking of "Basic Scuba Discussions"... RJP either that's a really cool photo on your avatar or you really need to work on your buoyancy :D

Yeah... Though I do still consider technical diving to be recreational as well, just a different "branch" due to the training and approach needed to safely undertake dives beyond the current limitations/recommendations of recreational sport (NDL) diving.

    Gear list priority

Mask, fins, snorkel first. Then I would probably go with a computer. Yes you can and will learn tables but really diving with a computer is much more practical and enjoyable. It doesn't need to be anything over the top, you can get something decent for less than 200 pounds sterling. For...

newbie diver intro and looking for some advice

In Nitrox Recreational mode on the Petrel (which i assume is what you will use), you have three settings Low, Med, Hi for conservatism. You can't actually dial in specific GF's like you can in Tech mode, these are already preset by the manufacturer in Nitrox Rec mode. I would suggest diving on...

My point is that if you're diving a typical NDL sport dive profile you wouldn't need all that stuff in the first place...

I suppose you could strap on a sh*tload of tanks with various gas mixtures and dive an NDL profile and it certainly wouldn't be a tech dive... not sure why someone would want to do that though - maybe its a good way to meet women? :cool2:

It is absolutely not a fixed boundary, but I'm not sure I would agree it is refined to define an elite. It can be used that way, certainly, but I would subscribe more to its literal-technical approach rather than to an attitude or manifestation of ego. During its early years it was in the...

I think you've actually just mentioned a few aspects, but perhaps a brief look at how recreational technical diving evolved and came into it’s current form (at least in the U.S.) may assist us in mapping out the term more accurately. I believe the actual term "technical diving" was first...

Not upset chief, I'm quite comfortable with alternative views but apparently it is you who seems to be missing the point. More specifically it is your approach in putting forth your views - whether you're discussing the definition of suicide, analyzing "groupthink", or any other number of...

Major Freak Out - What should I have done differently?

Interesting... I don't recall reading anything like that in Six Skills (haven't read Staying Alive yet), but are you sure you understood him correctly? perhaps he's making a distinction between a traditional BCD and 2 inch harness webbing used in a BP/Wing ? As Curt's photo shows, clipping one...

"hurt my feelings" ? really now NetDoc... Sad how you get a little snarky anytime someone doesn't agree with your sometimes bombastic reprimanding generalizations and puts forth an alternative. I don't need a quantifier to support my viewpoint, I just need to go to the Technical...

No I get what your saying, and I do agree that some people do use the term to boost their egos... but one could say the same about how someone chooses to call themselves "Advanced Diver" or "Master Scuba diver" etc.. My point is that the term "technical" in and of itself does not really carry...
