A deceptively easy way to die

Yup I remember this thread you started very well - it has a permanent bookmark saved to my computer and I refer to it often. As a matter of fact one of my posts on that very thread:

A deceptively easy way to die

I don't think it's about diver training discouraging thinking... it just seems that it is not as self-evident to some divers as one would hope. A couple of months ago I was in Sharm Al Sheikh, Egypt diving some wrecks and caves. One particular cave we dove was located inside a very popular...

    Encouragement for a beginner

Sometimes it takes a while to develop skills. For some it could be mask clearing, others buoyancy and trim, still others it may be fin technique or gas consumption etc.. Some folks grasp certain techniques very quickly and for others it comes much more gradually over several dives. Don't...

What types of things are written on a line cookie?

Just my name with a sharpie, but if I could get my name printed on a small batch for a tiny surcharge I might consider doing it... I think it would look pretty cool actually.

A deceptively easy way to die

I fail to see how any additional information that can provide new divers with knowledge and awareness of the potential risks in entering an overhead environment is gratuitous or counterproductive - this is precisely the group that will benefit the most. Those who are technically trained and...

    Looking to "upgrade", need assistance

If you're in Qatar then I would say Apex and Scubapro are your best options and easily serviced in your region. I've been diving Scubapro regs for nearly 20 years in primarily warm water conditions for both sport and tech diving. They have been very reliable with an established track record and...

    Petrel 2

It should be standard practice with all computers but because of the amount of customization the Petrel gives you, and the ease of use in which it's presented makes it all the more an important consideration. For example, if you violate certain parameters some computers will lock you out...

    Petrel 2

The Petrel is a great computer and has a Recreational mode that makes it appealing to non-tech divers. The only thing I would caution is that you thoroughly understand what all the settings mean. It's a very comprehensive and flexible computer that puts a lot of power in the diver's hands...

    Liveaboard

I would go for the 4D/4N package. You have more variety of sites and more options. Nothing says you or your friend have to do every dive, but if you want to... it's there.

What is the deepest you have been on pure O2?

1.4 is typically the recommended pp02 limit for any gas used during the bottom phase of a dive (sometimes 1.3 or even 1.2 is used). During the decompression phase when nitrox or 02 is used as a deco gas then 1.6 is the recommended limit - so yes, that gives you an MOD of 20 ft. In the past I...

Wing size for 5mm wetsuit aluminum 80

How much wetsuit compression do you expect at 6m? Most single tank divers (at least here in the Red Sea) shoot a DSMB up at their safety stop.

Thanks for this report. I've had Komodo and Raja Ampat on my short list for a while so this is very helpful. Cheers.

    Strange email from Maldives operator

It is certainly possible that the dive center that replied to you and mentioned PADI safety violations, did so to lure you over to them as they do have a vested interest, however, that doen't necessarily mean that what they're saying isn't true either. In any case, regardless of the dive...

Wing size for 5mm wetsuit aluminum 80

Honestly the way most wings are designed these days, the difference in size and drag between an 18lbs and 30 lbs is not really noticeable. 30lbs is probably a safer bet to cover all your bases... I've never encountered a situation where I needed less lift.
