Air integrated computer and tec diving

Your controlling factor will be your gas supply. Regardless of your deco obligation if you have not pre-planned accordingly (with contingent plans built in) and you run out of gas, then you have a choice.... risk getting bent or drowning. Pre-Planning will always matter in whatever phase of...

Air integrated computer and tec diving

Bottom line - LEARN THE BASICS. Learn to read tables, cut tables, follow Run Times, and master the skills of dive planning. Then if you want to go out and use a computer and ride it within your profile, use an AI, have redundant SPGs, or whatever tickles your fancy, then do so... as long...

    Anxiety Management

I have definitely had my share of anxiety during wreck and cave penetrations and I think it's actually much more common than we realize. In my training this was discussed as a psychological factor and the approaches on how to deal with it as well as the signal for "let's get the F out of here"...

Shearwater coming out with new DC?

It's very clear that Shearwater is one of the most responsive and dynamic manufacturers around. They are constantly adding timely firmware upgrades and it's evident that as they evolve they do so by constantly listening to customer feedback. Although the Petrel and it's predecessors have...

Gear Requirements for the Solo Diver?

Looks good to me. In general take down only what you need. If the requirements of the dive change then you can reconfigure. Have a core setup and then add or subtract accordingly to the needs of the dive and your dive plan.

Got a tip on how to breathe so you don't go through your air?

So much of it is a state of mind. Fitness level aside, if you are relaxed in the water and "in the moment" this tends to allow for a more relaxed breathing rate. As such... being trained in yoga, meditation, martial arts or any number of techniques that emphasize attention to breathing will...

Petrel 2 - OC Tec or OC Rec

I use both. I find all the info presented in Tec mode very useful to me on tech dives, but I like the interface simplicity of Rec mode for NDL dives. The layout is easy on the eyes and the safety stop countdown feature is nice.

Replacing hose on regulator...what lubricant to use for threads? Urgent!

A little lubricating of the 0-rings does help them to sit a better and not twist or make an improper seal. Christo-Lube is good and is O2 friendly.

    Regulator for a new diver

EVO is just Scubapro's solution to diving in colder water - a "Extended Thermal Insulating System" and "Anti-freee protection" etc... you will not notice any tangible difference between the two.

    Another vote for MK2+/R190

How many feel they have become more patient since they took up diving?

I've definitely become more patient and methodical under water.... unfortunately, I'm still a basket case on land :acclaim:

    Regulator for a new diver

You said it yourself... something reliable that lasts for years. You may be a novice now but in a few years if you keep it up you'll appreciate the Mk25. Its a great first stage built to last with excellent performance. It is my regulator of choice along with the S600.

trying to decide on these five options for a dive computer

Frankly, once you start to use a Petrel it becomes very difficult to imagine a more elegant and intuitive user-interface (and we're not even talking about it's reliability, features, and customer service). However, having said that... I have used Suunto's for close to 20 years on everything...

Wait to take advanced open water? Or not?

Sure... let's just hand out cards to students who've received "crappy" training and are not qualified to be admitted to more advanced dives on charters. Sounds like a great idea.

    scubapro S600 or A700

Congratulations - you have an excellent piece of kit that I'm sure will give you years of solid performance and enjoyment. The A700 is a little heavier but you won't really notice it when you're diving.

Is a hose upgrade worth it?

I too don't like braided hoses for either the primary or secondary reg. it really does chafe the neck unpleasantly. I use one occasionally only for my SPG. Personally have never felt a need for a swivel with a long hose.

Are dive computers making bad divers?

The premise that any tool can make you bad at something is IMHO essentially flawed. It is how one chooses to use that tool that will ultimately determine the end result. If you have either received poor instruction, acquired bad habits along the way, or are relying on a specific tool to the...
