    Creature identification

Looks like a slipper lobster. I'm curious to see how long it takes to get the detailed identification! Cameron

Spreadsheet for helping pick a pony bottle

Thanks for putting the calculations together in a nicely laid out spreadsheet! It's interesting to see. That's direct ascent omitting the optional safety stop, correct? For recreational (no stop) diving as per our basic training? Or for solo diving without a buddy as the redundant air supply...

My Colombia Deep incident... Need your advice

Yes. And you can test that quite easily. The tricky thing about second stage swivels is they can silently unscrew and don't leak until the oring (captive in the barrel) pops completely free when it entirely unscrews. Loosening a little normally doesn't cause a leak or any hint... Not lightly...

    Wind Directions

Wind direction is which direction the wind is blowing FROM. A North wind is coming from the north. That said... 4 days out things change fairly substantially, hopefully you'll enjoy some lovely dives. Cameron

Is there a time limit after classroom and pool.

Generally it's 12 months but contacting your regional padi office with the situation may find an exception to this general guideline. Cameron

My Colombia Deep incident... Need your advice

Glad you had an attentive, calm and skilled diver nearby and the presence of mind to head for them! I like hearing when training works. Sure kicks up a lot of bubbles doesn't it! Saw a Omni swivel fail two days ago in the water (not mine). Cameron

What’s the warmest water you’ve ever dived?

I've enjoyed a short dive in a hot spring... Roughly 110°. Otherwise, Panama was the warmest 'normal' water at around 86° in the shallows.

Cave training - GUE vs. TDI/IANTD (or other)

What I noticed when I shopped around was the vast majority of the most respected and longest lasting cave instructors hold cards from multiple agencies. My choice would have been limited if I chose the brand before the instructor. I do poorly with generic cookie cutter approach style teaching...

I'm a rec instructor. I want to be a tec instructor. No tec experience. I'm gonna need your help.

It's enough to make me want to start a thread like this!

Any one eyed divers out there?

My good friend dives with one eye, depth perception a challenge but he is a far better diver than I am regardless... Also he has one leg amputed. I've had a bad eye infection and dove with a patch inside my mask... It isn't a very challenging adjustment. I imagine if you're already familiar...

Kaboom, or why I replace hoses after five years even if they look great.

Yes, the old (50+ year old) industrial hose standards changed in the 70s and at a glance it's possible to tell the 4,000psi hose is the design that can/will rupture catastrophically. This warning doesn't apply to modern hoses. I've yet to a rubber HP hose pass visual and service testing...

    Thoughts on my trim/frog kick?

Looking good. Glad you noticed the asymmetrical kick before you develop a habit. (An old injury perhaps?) In support of your goal to improve, I'd recommend trying to add task loading. Trying to do something while holding trim and proper propulsion is a new challenge. The second thing I noticed...

What do you keep spares of?

I keep multiples of everything. Depends how easy buying a replacement is and how important not missing a dive is. For me, parts are difficult to come by. So I stock my own backups. In a place like Florida, or anywhere with fast shipping I'd likely only have a couple orings spare and buy the...

Kaboom, or why I replace hoses after five years even if they look great.

Thanks for sharing. Any estimate how old the hose in question was? The weave of the construction looks peculiar, 1960s? Yes I take the same lesson, test old equipment prior to use. I've had a few hoses let go catastrophically while checking over equipment. It's a change when needed item for...

Efficient path to tec trimix instructor?

Sadly not, but seems easy enough to load of a keg of sorb and a few o2 bottles to go with my breather and ask him to toss me over the side of a boat and not forget about me in a few hours. I do think that's a great angle. Developing infrastructure to support tec diving would be an excellent...

    Good chicken place?

I've had fairly good success with taxis. Took a few hundred before I got my truck. There is a lull in service mid afternoon. Another option, if you are on Facebook messager, there is a taxi dispatch system you can write. Also a number you can call. They charge an extra 7 (I think) pesos and...
