    Lost diver in Puget Sound

We called a tech dive (using approriate gear and gas for the dive, interestingly enough) the day before. We didn't want to chance it. Even if it was much clearer at depth, you're still in the mud on the descent, stops, and ascent.

    Lost diver in Puget Sound

    Yeah, probably a good idea.

    I think I'm in love

Yeah, and he wouldn't even breathe heavily...but make him do a surface swim of more than 20' and he'd collapse from exhaustion ;)

They say one drug just leads to more drugs...apparently you're aware of that too! :D

    a landmark evening ...

I second that. They were an enormous help for me when I first starting diving doubles. It took me 2 weeks, doing them 2 - 3 times a day to finally reach my valves. After another couple of weeks I could reach them comfortably. Nice job Bob...it's a great feeling once you're finally able to...

    Mickey Mouse hands ...

Bob, are you going into a "head up" position when you're doing the shutdowns? If so, I can see how that would present a problem. I used to go into a slight heads up position when doing valve drills and I did encounter that problem occasionally. Now, when I'm doing shutdowns, I either stay...

    Carlsbad

Awesome! Thanks for the suggestions and links. I'll start doing some research. Given the choice, what would you do if you had 2 days to spend either boat or shore diving? Brian

    Carlsbad

Hey everyone - Looks like I may be in Carlsbad for a conference in early November and I'd like to get an idea of options for getting in the water over the weekend of November 4th and 5th. Any suggestions? I don't even know where to start. Thanks Brian

    Seattle Diver Death

I kind of had the decision not to remove the gear made for me. When I was first arrived to the victim, a couple of do-gooders had grabbed an aluminum skiff they rent at the crab shop. They motored out to provide assistance, but the had maneuvered the boat very close to the victim and I...

    Seattle Diver Death

Keep in mind that we were able to see/hear emergency response enroute just after we got to the victim. This made the decision to just get her in to shore quickly a little more clear.

    Fins for Frog Kick

Yes, it can cause a lot of problems, beyond just kicking up silt. There is an inherent upward thrust with the flutter kick. While it is propelling you forward, the upward thrust on the "down cycle" has a great tendency to push the diver up as well. That's why many divers achieve neutral...

When does PADI teach gas planning?

As others have mentioned, students who finish OW are certified to 60'. I completely agree that the student, as a diver, must be proficient with air/gas management. I have personally tried to teach RB at the OW level and I am sorry to say, it caused quite a bit of confusion. Ok, maybe not...

When does PADI teach gas planning?

I went from OW through divemaster with PADI and Rock Bottom was never once even mentioned. The rule of thirds was, in the divemaster course IIRC (it's been a while). I tried to teach RB at the open water level (NAUI) on a couple of occasions and came to the realization that I was causing...

First Open Water Dive Disaster and Weighting Issues

I'll chime in...Typically we bring each student out to about 8' of water and descend (we brief the student on the proper way to descend). We keep a divemaster on the beach at this point to bring us more weight, or take weight back to the beach from the student. If they can't descend, or they...

    Deep stops and ascents...

I teach my OW students to do a 1 minute 1/2 stop, an ascent rate of 10' per minute, and a 3 minute stop between 10-20', followed by a slow ascent from 10' to the surface.

    Diving Concepts dealers-drysuit model question

I have the Z-Tech w/ the variable dump on the forearm, if that's what you're asking. I think they call the small, non-adjustable valve on the forearm a "cuff dump". I opted to have the variable valve installed on the forearm (instead of the shoulder). Either way, they can do either with...

Maui Shore Dive Guide - Maui Dreams? Maui Dive Shop?

I think any dive shop on Maui will have the book. It's at home, and I can't think of the author, but it's called "The Diver's Guide to Maui", very useful book, definitely worth picking up. If you're staying in the Kihei/Wailea area, I definitely recommend Maui Dreams Dive Company. They...

Need advice on what to do about error in custom dry suit

Disclaimer- I am an instructor for the lds, though I have nothing to gain or lose, regardless of the end result of this situation. From a consumer standpoint, I do have thoughts on this that have not been addressed in this thread. I too ordered a custom drysuit 3 or so years ago (from a...
