    Reverse Profile Diving

+1 The Rubicon repository is your friend, a great source of knowledge. The 400+ pages in the proceedings of the 2000 Reverse Profiles Workshop are well worth reading. The history of the "no reverse profiles" [-]rule[/-] guideline is also an interesting thing to look in to and certainly...

    TDI Deco Procedures Course Update?

As I understand it, all the materials are being revised. Slowly, but surely.

    TDI Deco Procedures Course Update?

I'm really looking forward to the release of the new course materials. I like the latest revision of materials for other courses, though to be honest they are a little bit let down by some typos. Quite happy to volunteer as an additional proof-reader for the deco procedures material if it...

Tips on doing PADI DM Mapping Project

Have a think about what you would want if you turned up at a dive site you didn't know - let that be your guide. Would you want to look through several pages, cross referencing features of the site?

Tips on doing PADI DM Mapping Project

Ask your instructor what they expect. You'll find that different instructors interpret the exercise in different ways. Some are looking for exact detail depth measurements and dimensions. Personally, I am looking for a usable map that helps people become oriented to a dive site from the surface.

    what about after OW

Just being picky, you can in fact do all of Rescue with "OW and a second diving certification, with experience of deep and navigation dives". The "need" to do AOW to complete Rescue is one of the most mis-quoted standards around.

Divemaster Training Changes Coming in June?

As this thread has been resurrected, as I understand it the PADI DM course is due for a major overhaul this year with the new course due for release in Q3. I was asked to provide some input into the redesign, as were other members of the instructor development community. One of the things...

Options for budget diving in NZ

Not wanting to be too negative, but unless you're entitled to work in NZ then it's going to be a tough ask to get work. Unsure how old you are, but if you're not eligible to work here already and are under 30 then you can try applying for a working holiday visa. Most people start thinking...

    Deco reg

I've still got a 3000 that I keep for "stage reg emergencies".... it works fine. I suspect (though I'm not 100% convinced) that the HOG 5th port upgrade will fit the DiveRite regs. In which case you could buy one 3100 and one 5th port upgrade to use on your backgas. Then get one of the 3000s...

Options for budget diving in NZ

Yeah, sorry Rob.... I wasn't too precise with my wording and was perhaps a bit too glib by not saying "Some Wellington locals". ;)

    Deco reg

What are you using for backgas? Buying something for a deco reg that minimises the parts you need should something go wrong is not a bad idea. Generally, most regs will work fine. I've used Scubapro mk20 with r395 second stages for a while, but I've also used HOG regs, DiveRite, Apek etc...

SAC vs RMV - What is standard?

Not sure of the "official line" on this. My view: RMV and SAC (and SCR) are essentially the same thing. I use RMV when using volumetric terms, e.g. litres per minute. I would get students to measure it in the same as a SAC, e.g. maintain a constant depth for a specified period of time and...

Options for budget diving in NZ

Sorry for the delay in replying - I try to keep an eye on the NZ forum, but must have missed your post a few days ago! Whilst you can get some good dives done on a shoestring, I'd suggest budgeting for a couple of items to really get the most our of your diving here. Volkner Rocks is...

What's the deal with these numbers?

The recommendations are based on perceived risk. Take the 18m (60ft) recommendation for new divers that some agencies use. This makes perfect sense - the theoretical models that Lynne refer to start to change at around that depth, so that the NDLs become much shorter. At 18m, the typical...

    Dive Instructor Training Abroad

To be honest, this question comes up fairly often on SB. For that $10,000 also don't forget to add in flights, and for some centres living costs and accommodation. From a purely financial perspective, there is very little sense in travelling overseas. You will find the training works out...

    Some thoughts about diving alone

Agreed. You only have to read the DAN reports to realise that separation is in fact one of the most significant factors in many accidents. I agree with your sentiments, Lynne - but the "lack of knowing" is a factor in many deaths. In a head on collision involving two cars that kills both...

    the DIR moniker

Bob answered this fairly well.... this certainly isn't what I meant at all. I meant this on two levels. One is answering the OP as to what moniker we should replace "DIR" with.... and my response to that is "DIR... it's just diving". But I also meant it as a reminder. Why get hung up on...

    Handling failure

You do it again. Break down the "failure" into accessible chunks, work on those chunks in isolation to build the students confidence and then repeat the scenario again in it's entirety.

    "Fundies" in Alberta, Canada?

There is no right or wrong time to take Fundies, IMHO. In some respects, it is better to dot he course earlier - it avoids you having to "unlearn" habits before you can improve your skills. There's a real perception that Fundies is a "test" and that the only way to "pass" is to spend months...
