    Advice on buying a BCD

You really can't go wrong with a halcyon backplate and wing. The price seems a little high, but not totally out of line. There are a few on ebay going for a little less, but not sure how shipping to Hawaii would work. I can't recommend highly enough starting with a backplate/wing setup. A...

Boot on top of a wetsuit or a wetsuit on top of the boot?

in my semi-dry: inner neoprene seal polypropylene sock outer wetsuit zippered seal boot I only pee in borrowed wetsuits.

Just an FYI for those considering advanced training with me this season.

From my perspective, not that it matters... The requirement to own or provide a lot of the ancillary gear (i.e. reels, spools, dSMBs, etc.) seems like it does present a problem. There is a lot of variance in the details and finish of a lot of this type of gear (side handle vs top handle reel...

    Doubles recommendation for tall diver

at 6'5", I'm running PST LP104s and they trim out great. I don't mind the width, but I've got a large frame, even for my (our) height, carrying 280+ lbs and still easily meeting the Army standard. I second that adjusting the tank position has more to do with trimming out properly than does the...

Instructors should take some advanced training as well. Yea or Nay? Does it matter?

Without reading all 6 pages of the post, I'll throw my opinion in as a still relatively new diver still getting training on a regular basis: I think continuing education is important, up to date on CPR, best standards and practices, and particularly medical information (narcosis, O2 tox, etc.)...

Laziness, complacency or is it just me?

I would respectively disagree with that. The additional threads do provide extra holding capacity for the valve-regulator fit. And for divers using HP tanks, or LP tanks with "cave-fills," a 300 bar valve provides a measure of security that a 200 or 250 bar valve does not provide, and ensures...

Laziness, complacency or is it just me?

The 300 bar DIN valves are supposed to be of a depth such that a yoke regulator cannot fit over them, since most yoke regs are only rated for 232 bar. Most guys I know recommend 200 bar din valves for everything except HP steel tanks. The inserts for the 200 bar din valves are fairly readily...

How easy to remove/replace pony valves when traveling?

And yet maximum torque listed from catalina is 50, and recommended is 40. Going to max torque is 25% higher than recommended. They state right on their page: "Hand tightening of the valve should seat the valve completely on the cylinder (i.e. no gap between the valve and the cylinder). If...

Question about weighting with doubles in Florida

I'm not a florida diver, but when I went down for training, I was in a wetsuit, and I was outnumbered by dry-divers. I was not the only diver in a wetsuit, but was certainly in the minority in the springs. a wetsuit may feel 'lighter' in the water, but if you've got a shell suit it'll be...

    How you met scuba diving

Wife and I decided we wanted to do a full on honeymoon to Turks and Caicos for our honeymoon. I decided if we were going to the Caribbean for our honeymoon I'd want to go diving. We decided to get certified before we got married so that we could focus on having fun on our honeymoon. We had a...

    Moving to Korea...

I sent all my gear over. Double lp104s, al100, and an al30 bailout. Plus regs, fins, etc. Ive still got my 8/7 wetsuit here but it'll go over too. I just didnt have another wetsuit I could use for diving between now and then. I'll maintain an APO while im there so shipping gear shouldnt be too...

    Moving to Korea...

Is your friend still there? I'd really love some contacts in the area. I'm sure I can find other army divers but I'd really rather meet up with new interesting people. And not kill them. I want them to survive. Not like the t-shirt... But new and interesting is good. What is the point of going...

    Moving to Korea...

I'm moving (at the behest of the Army) to S. Korea in a few weeks. My dive gear is already all packed up and on its way over. I'm looking for tips or advice on who to contact. I've already got an email address for a PSAI contact, but I'm looking for more information. I noticed that there was...

Which set of doubles would you rather have? 104 or 100s?

The Army pays for my regular chiropractor appointments (still active duty...). My boss never understood how after a long weekend of diving I was dang-near pain free. Once I was in the water everything felt weightless... In all honesty they are some very heavy tanks. But for shore diving...

Would this be a decent trade? Lp95 for 100's

I'm sure I could find a pair of 100s to trade you for. remember that at 2780psi your tanks are the same as 100's. is it really worth the trade?

How easy to remove/replace pony valves when traveling?

Thats a bit much torque. off the catalina site: Hand tightening of the valve should seat the valve completely on the cylinder (i.e. no gap between the valve and the cylinder). If there is still a gap between the valve and the bottom of the cylinder lightly tap the valve handle with a rawhide...

Which set of doubles would you rather have? 104 or 100s?

at over 6' go for the 104s. larger moment of intertia and they won't be too long. and then there is the cave fill. at a very heavy handed 4000psi you get 320cf. that's like adding a whole other hp100. Wondering what effect those fills had on the time-until-rebuild on my regs...

    DIR GoPro mounting

I've got mine setup with a clip right now in a similar fashion, but I removed the extension from the housing (the short black portion with the screw on it). Seemed to me like having the extension and bolt was one more complication and something that could snag on monofilament. I picked up a...

Advice and Tips on how to rig backplate and harness (Hollis) to suit a tall person

I never worried about touching the backplate. I set my tanks up so the top band was right at the break of the tanks, and have them positioned in the second hole on my plate (old diverite plate that was reshaped and had new holes drilled for pad and adjustability of the tanks). That setup...
