Cheaping out on Trimix - travel gas

Specifics and proportionality matter. This isn't a dive to 140' and 32% is in back gas. What if this was an example of doing a dive to 180' and they had 18/45 in the bottle and 21/35 in back gas? Maybe to save money or maybe because they had the 21/35 tanks filled already and wanted to burn the...

Cheaping out on Trimix - travel gas

I 100% believe it. We are talking about a 117' dive. 32% would still be within 1.4 - 1.6 PPO2. I would just use nitrox on this dive, but if you were to use helium this would be the most cost effective way to do it.

Cheaping out on Trimix - travel gas

Your buddy's deco gas. When diving with one deco gas you also have the reserve in your back gas Depends on a number of factors, but ultimately it is a about limiting up front expenses and reducing the amount of trimix that needs to get dumped. The shop might have some trimix tanks always...

Used JJ CCR prices in North America?

It is DiveCan. If forget exact date, but Analog was the original JJ design and is only units 2013 or older. Anything 2015 (and probably 2014) will be DiveCan.

Cheaping out on Trimix - travel gas

I imagine it is a version of "cheaping out" on helium. They do the bulk of the dive on helium and switch to the 32% for portion and the ascent up to their deco. Means they only have to refill an al80 with trimix and not all their backgas. Not a bad strategy for 35m. I would just dive that on...

Cheaping out on Trimix - travel gas

Tech 1 is only one bottle. There is actually a Tech 1+ (called Tech 60) which incorporates two bottles, but that class is a 1 or 2 day workshop and not many people take it. Like the official 30 min deco limit, tech 1 divers slightly increase the equipment and dive times once they go out into the...

Used JJ CCR prices in North America?

Age, condition, items included (tanks, BOV, Nerd, etc) and Analog vs Dive Can play the biggest role. Prices are typically between 6,000 - 7,200 USD for Dive Can and 4,800 - 6,000 for Analog units. The unit that was apparently sold for 6,500 euro was an outlier. You also need to remember that...

The Great Helium Hunt of 2021

Honestly, you could have bought almost 2 Ts of helium for what they are charging.

The Great Helium Hunt of 2021

I understand you are in a tough spot, but that invoice infuriates me to my core and I could never get fills from that shop. 18.50 as a flat surface charge, .70 a cuft for O2, helium @ 4 FRACKING SIXTY. They even put their thumb on the scale when counting the helium cuft. Jesus...

    DIR- GUE Fundies buddies

There is nothing in that scenario that stops the class from happening it just won't be the most fulfilling experience. In my experience, most instructors are able to find a diver to play buddy in that situation--either a former student or a local GUE diver.

The Great Helium Hunt of 2021

Ball Park, yes. Target goal is within .5% of target O2 and 5% within target helium goal. Each fill station and gauge has it's own little quirks that you learn to adapt to/utilize. For example, a cold 543 psi like in your example would actually lead to 33.2% nitrox when cooled to 3500. So...

The Great Helium Hunt of 2021

That's a little confusing. All standard gases (except 30/30) are made by filling the cylinder volume with the desired percentage of helium and then filling the remaining volume with 32%. 21/35 is created by filling tank 35% with helium, and 65% Nitrox 32. 12/65 is created by filling tank with...

    DIR- GUE Fundies buddies

This. I was going to make a longer comment, but this covers it all. On paper it's better to have the "experienced" buddies, but you would be shocked how often it is the single tank new divers that are fun to work with in class and the super experienced "tech diver" struggles. If you have a...

GUE Fundies -- Locally or Florida?

Most classes are done in drysuit regardless of location, no gloves is typical for warm water locations. No hood depends on water temp--70's can get cold given the duration of water exposure in those courses.

    Lightmonkey Support?

Light Monkey's response was tactful and correct, the stage rigging you purchased has absolutely nothing to do with sidemounting tanks. Your question was the equivalent of an OW diver saying they want to take Nitrox so they can go 'deeper'. You aren't the first person to ask a dumb question and...

DIR- Generic What are people using for backup lights now?

A compact Big Blue light like the Big Blue 1200 have great burn times, fantastic light output, and are easy to clip off or store in pockets. The Halcyon scout and LM 2/3W work, but are definitely a dated technology and there are higher quality options at lower prices on the market.

    Fathom vs. KISS Classic?

The same tank configuration as the GUE JJ (manifolded LP50s,. O2 bottle, and/or Inflation bottle on back of unit) only with a fathom. I don't believe GUE invented the tank set up, but they certainly brought it into the mainstream. The tank setup isn't unique to the JJ and can be done on other...

Ginnie Springs diver missing - Florida

That is a weak argument and a deflection. 1. Gas doesn't magically disappear-any escaping gas can be heard and seen. PO2 dropping can only be accurately observed looking at a monitoring system--controller/HUD 2. Time--The time it takes to breathe down a tank is a much longer duration than...

Ginnie Springs diver missing - Florida

I think 21/35 or something close to that would be a better choice in this scenario. The mCCR with leaky valve vs a eCCR dynamic can also play a role in dil choice. You said it yourself--32% would take a lot to flush the loop and get it down. With an eCCR, 32% is a little more forgiving as you...
