    Spinner Knife Issue

I have one.. the knife itself is nice but the retention system is pretty junk. As others have said - the small screws are a failure point, and the knife itself isn't well-retained in the sheath. That said mine hasn't come out yet, but I think it will continue to loosen with time. I've only had...

    Some thoughts about diving alone

I was doing a night shore dive and got separated from the group. Since I was only in 35 feet of water I just decided to ascend since I knew I was only about 200 yards offshore (This was off a fairly familiar residential area). FWIW, I always carry redundant lights, a whistle, and a strobe as...

    Canon s90 or Panasonic TS2

Something else to consider is that if you do flood at moderate depth (say.. 50 feet), there's a good chance the TS2 will survive whereas the S90 will almost certainly die. Also you won't have to babysit as much.. i.e. if you had to open the housing for some reason it's not a big deal if some...

Buying Used Tanks - Reasonable Price / Considerations?

Someone on craigslist here was advertising 4 scuba tanks.. they professed they weren't quite sure what they had (story was some old roommate left them or whatever). Some quick mental math.. Roughly $30 for hydro, another $60+ for a valve (parts/labour), $20-30 for cleaning (if something turns...

    Spring Straps - help

I have the Apollo spring straps (on Apollo Bio-Fins but I don't think it matters). They mount permanently using a backing plate and a small bracket on the outside.. the whole thing bolts together. Hopefully that makes sense. Note this is not reversible. Once you install them.. the little 'nub'...

    conservative Mares?

Are you sure that isn't the surface interval to completely reset you to a surface pressure group? Or you're misreading it (90 minutes?) To test that, I would take a reasonable SI (say 1 hour) and then do a shallow dive to 10m and see what the computer does.

    Is Suunto really that bad

May have already been stated, but it's worth pointing out that if you compare to the broader spectrum of computers out there - Suunto is not necessarily the most conservative; it's often somewhere in the middle. That said, Oceanic (and friends e.g. Aeris) are the most popular followed by Suunto...

Recommend me a beginner dive computer

I like the Gekko. You can still buy them through some places. The Zoop is exactly the same.. just a different colour and they "unlocked" downloads. It is possible to download stuff from the Gekko it just requires using different log software and/or tricking Suunto's software. Does Air/Nitrox...

    DIY Backplate materials

Just want to point out another option is to pick up one used. Given SS backplates can be had for something like 80-110 new I imagine you can probably find one used in the $60-70 range with some looking. Not to discourage people from being creative (if you have the tools and means.. go ahead!)...

    Mini wide

Old thread, but this is what it looks like. It's basically like a spring clip that fits into the grooves. I was a little skeptical when I first saw it but it seems pretty secure. I'm sure you could break it if you wanted to but that's anything. It comes in different colours, including black...

    Thanks Intova/Kevin

I purchased a mini Intova torch and it didn't come with a lanyard! I emailed Intova and by the next business day they had offered to mail me a lanyard. I mentioned that I live in Honolulu and he said it was no problem to come pick one up that very day! Kevin was also nice enough to talk to me...

    Dive Light for Spearing?

There are many, many discussions on this. Short version is if you don't need a really bright lamp - get an LED If you want a really bright lamp (more than say a 10 watt LED) - look at HID. Technical reason being that LEDs get less efficient as you overdrive them whereas HIDs become more...

    New low for oxycheq

So rather than try to resolve the situation now you CYA? Won't be buying anything from you either.

    Does Oxycheq have a response?

Well if Oxycheq ever reads this.. you just lost a sale. I was about to pick up one of the ultralight plates + bladders (due to their small size), but if the service is terrible.. forget about it. I'll go elsewhere.

To those considering an OW class...

I agree (wrt original post, have not read all 70+ pages). However there are exceptions. I am an open water swimmer (can swim for miles), and have been in around the water swimming/snorkelling/bodysurfing etc since I was probably about 5 - my mother taught me to swim. For people that are...
