    Hawaiian Vacation

Consider Kauai as well, personally I prefer it over Maui. Don't get me wrong, I was born on Maui so it holds a special place in my heart; but whenever I go there I feel like I spend my whole time driving. Kauai just seems to have more to do.. Maui is a bit more setup for rich people that want...

    Where to dive in December

Then my two suggestions would be either Kauai or Big Island.. both have good diving.. really depends what else you like to do or haven't done.. e.g. observatory.. volcano.. on Big Island versus the canyon, caves, great beaches etc on Kauai.

    Where to dive in December

If you're only here for a few nights I'd just stay on Oahu.. not really worth the hassle of travelling to another island. Check out the south shore wrecks (YO, Sea Tiger, Corsair, etc). North is pretty much closed in December. West side may be open and has good dives as well (E Beach, Caverns...

    Magnetic Octopus Holder

I don't recommend using magnets for holding an octo. Gets annoying with any ferrous particle sticking and preventing it from engaging properly and occasionally will pop out by inadvertent contact making it unreliable in an emergency.

    Big Island diving in December

I sport my own blubber so a 1 mil fullsuit works fine for me. Most of my friends either use 3/2s or 5/4s. A few people use 7s but they're very thin and are diving a lot. Water temperature here is basically 75 year round (ignoring the shallows where it'll be closer to 80 near summer). If you're...

    Back on the market

Send me a pm, I'm usually looking to dive on weekends.

    What is the best Rebreather?

Hi I just wanted to point out that while scrubber life is often cited as a limitation in rebreather diving time, CNS clock is also something that should not be ignored. If you're diving 1.3 PO2 then 3 hours of diving = 100% clock - which is roughly what most scrubbers will give you. happy diving.

    End tidal CO2 Monitoring

Scrubber breakthrough does not occur quite as instantaneously as some comments in this thread may have implied. If you have a sensor capable of reliably detecting CO2 percentages to the tenth of a percent in small amounts (e.g. 0.3%) it would be worthwhile to have in a CCR. Breakthrough is...

    Lovely diving watch?

Very true John, I think I implied more than I really meant - A good dive computer should certainly last more than a few years when properly paired to the task. Still, dive computer technology is moving much faster than automatic analog watches.. which will outlive all of us if properly cared for.

    Lovely diving watch?

It's only marked to ISO 2281 standards. They can market it however they want but they haven't actually tested the watch which makes it pretty clear it's just a "dive-style" watch of which there are many. 2281 testing involves only taking a few production samples and submitting them to static...

    Recommend a wrist EANx computer

Just get a Gekko, you can still find NOS at some places. There wasn't much difference between the old Vyper and the Gekko except for gauge mode / backlight (It's essentially the same software, just has some things disabled).

    Lovely diving watch?

Let's try to avoid the whole diving with tables vs diving with computers debate.. she's trying to get him a gift.. Go start a new thread or join one of the numerous ones on that EXCITING and NEW topic ;) Anyway, people can probably give better suggestions with more input on the type of diving...

    BP/W is just a tool

Kinda like your comment? (And yes mine now as-well). Honestly my first thought when seeing this thread was just 'why?'. Why do we need to have this discussion YET AGAIN? Some people like driving trucks.. others like driving sedans.. others like coupes. Let's see.. I can carry an upright...

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

This whole discussion has become ridiculous. Is that really how you plan your dives? Based on what some class you took says you can do? As opposed to you know.. what your experience/gear/buddy/conditions can support in ADDITION to training. I don't know about you, but I have little...

    Cave Diving Courses in Hawaii?

Hi, I'm interested in training to the level of Cavern/Basic Cave Diver in Hawaii along the lines of NACD/NSS-CDS standards. I know this is pretty far from a cave mecca, but I was hoping there might be someone here that does this. We do have some basic caves/lava tubes after all so it's not...

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

I don't see a problem with running a line, especially if you were exploring the small caves. Granted there's usually good visibility and they're not particular dark but if you feel you want it.. do it. I dive with 160' on a finger spool for such occasions though I admit I seldom use it. As...

    Novae - Dive SST-50 Flashlight 1200LM (100M) + MORE!

Avnet has single-unit prices for the LED itself at $19.. so curious what the price is going to be for the whole unit. If 3 hours burn time is real, at the right price this seems like a pretty sweet light. Heck, just pick up 2 and keep small backups tucked well away. Here's the manufacturer's...

    Fish sensitive to LEDs?

Sea critters are generally attuned to blue-green light rather than red-yellow light. So if you used a halogen you'd be less visible than with an HID. It goes both ways though.. Red-yellow light gets absorbed faster versus a more blue light. And sure, if you turn your lights off, more stuff will...

BLADEFISH Sea Jets - A Completely Different Approach

I think a better question is whether they will still be in business 3 years from now.. As for all these people saying "Hey leave us alone.. let us have our ignorant bliss" - there has been discussion of paraplegic/older/unfit divers using these. I sure as heck wouldn't trust my life on some...
