1st Time Maui - Too Many Choices

Thanks! I don't want to badmouth Lahaina Divers - they ran a safe boat. My preference is just for smaller boats and longer dive times. I do have a few tips, that were passed along to me. If you chat up your guide a little and let them know you're experienced, that can help. Then, be ready first...

1st Time Maui - Too Many Choices

I checked my computer and here's the stats: Dive 1: Max Depth: 68ft, Avg Depth 44ft, Total Dive Time: 47mins (no name Site) SI: 47mins Dive 2: Max Depth: 57ft, Avg Depth 40ft, Total Dive Time: 49mins (2nd Cathedral Site) So, not too bad - I'm just spoiled from smaller boats.

1st Time Maui - Too Many Choices

Well, I've only had 5 dives with ERDA so I can't conclude anything. The DM we had was pretty hands-off, but I'm sure that's not true of all of them (from any shop). My policy is that if someone does that, I swim away and indicate that I don't want them spotting for me. The real joy for me is...

1st Time Maui - Too Many Choices

I thought I would update this post with a trip report, from the diving perspective. I appreciate the input from everyone. Here's what I ended up doing: Lahaina Divers 2 tank Lanai charter (no name & Cathedrals 2) Ed Robinson 3-tank Adventure (2 Molokini Backwall, 1 Red Hill) Solo shore dive -...

    Yelled at for MOF

The inanity of the MOF rule aside, I would like to commend the OP (@stuartv ) for his use of the word "natatorium". I had never heard that word before. Scubaboard=Leanring! I plan to use this in pool classes now - welcome, students, to the Natatorium!

    Almost!

I almost got the shot! Found this Fantail Filefish in Maui at the Mala pier and I almost got a good shot. This will go in my memories folder, but not my gallery - too much fishbutt! What a magnificent fish, though. Next time. Feel free to post your "almost" shots.

Paralenz - Worlds first action camera for divers

Color correction is software-based. Selectable for Green or Blue water. The amount of color correction applied is proportional to depth. As of now, you cannot manually change the amount applied, but I've talked with the company and they may implement a "power scale" (apply cc 25%, 50%, 100%...

    Maui Elevation question

If you go the normal southerly route, you'll barely change elevation at all. If you go the adventurous northern route, which most rental car agreements prohibit, then you'll get up to about 310m above sea level. Still not much to worry about. You can use this site to check your exact route...

    Eleuthera in July - Shore?

We stayed in the north-middle of the island (Rainbow Bay). I made a significant effort to rent some tanks and do some dives on my own, but there was simply no one willing to do that. I went to the "dive shop" in Governnor's Harbour, but they basically had a few snorkels for sale. They gave me a...

    Happy Perdix Owner Pic

I've owned many dive computers over the years, but after really putting my new Perdix through its paces, I can't see myself diving anything other than Shearwater in the future. The design and function is purposeful and thought out, rather than haphazard and thrown together. I was a little mad...

OMD EM5 mII and Neewer case: 12-50 or mm?

The 60mm can definitely be tricky when shooting anything bigger than medium-sized fish. But it's such a great lens! So crisp and colorful! If you can use your 14-150, or get a cheap 14-42 as others have suggested, then I'd spring for the 60mm (especially if you can't access the macro mode of the...

    Semi-Dry for Big Guy

I'm looking to get into some more cold water diving. I'm not ready to invest in a dry suit, but I am interested in a semi-dry. However, I'm a very big guy. I'm 6'5" (~196cm) tall, very wide shoulders, and just large all around. In wetsuits, I usually wear Pinnacle brand size 3XL, which can be...

Little and Grand Cayman trip report and video

Sorry to hear about you camera. If you like shooting video, you might be able to pickup a used Panasonic GH4 setup from someone who is upgrading to a GH5. The GH4 is widely regarded as a kick-ass video setup that can take great stills as wll. I enjoyed your video. It's only been 2 months since I...

    Lost Camera - Dania Beach

Diving the Dania Beach erojacks site Friday 6/23. Entry was a little rough, someone in my party lost their camera. Fantasea housing, ys-d2 strobe. Reward (karmic and monetary) if anyone happens upon it. Thanks!

    Best Caribbean dive Resorts??

If you don't care about life outside the resort, check out Little Cayman Beach Resort. Only a couple hours away, spectacular diving, and you barely have to lift a finger. There is very little to do besides the diving, but if that doesn't bother you, it's easy to feel spoiled at LCBR. In addition...

    Little Cayman Photo Gallery

I spent the first week of April 2017 at Little Cayman Beach Resort. I took a group of 20 people and everyone had a great time, including me. I won't get into too many details with the trip report - there are several LCBR trip reports here and they all pretty much concur. Since our group had an...

    DM insurance - double indemnity?

It is both legal and a very good idea to have your own personal liability DM insurance as well as be on the shop's policy. The LDS I work with - not everyone does this, but many do, even if they're not leading trips outside the shop.
