    Two fatalities in Monterey

This is about as accurate as saying that holding your breath will result in a fatal embolism. Having conducted hundreds of free ascents from depths in excess of 60', I feel obligated to call BS.

    Justifying solo diving to others

I'll usually ask them which they believe is more dangerous: solo or checkouts with students. This has worked with everyone but my wife. Yes, but are they permitted to fly at night or other adverse conditions? Isn't it true that there are significant restrictions placed on new pilots? Pilots are...

Are Backplates beneficial for your back?

No flames, but.... In most cases, the issue can be identified as being more related to fitness or technique, than gear. Configuring a rig to favor land use typically works against its functionality in its intended environment.

Are Backplates beneficial for your back?

It would probably help his posture if he adjusted it properly and wore it on land, without anything else attached. Good posture is the key to good back health. ;) The only way to really help the back is to reduce the load on it and a plate won't help you there. I know this because my back goes...

The kind of question you'd expect a new diver to ask

I've never been bitten by a shark, but I'd have to guess there aren't many folks who would consider it to be a normal thing. I've also got a pretty strong suspicion that those who have been bitten haven't really gotten used to it.

Warped Dive World Evolution - BP/W Subgroup Mindset

Efficiency at translating effort to speed is a good thing, but many of the most efficient fins achieve this efficiency at the expense of functionality.

    Hey Aqua Lung, Wake Up

**** happens, but your experience is far from being a trend and it sounds like you're being treated as fairly as possible, no? Keep in mind, the issue could have originated with the LDS which sold you the rig. If there was anything defective, it should have been caught at the shop when they...

Can my friend dive on a busted ankle?

Don't do it. I probably would have, but I doubt it's a good idea. It would be difficult not to use either ankle in several phases of diving, but the worst would be prior to the actual dive, while in full kit on land or worse yet, a boat that is rocking. He'd be putting a lot more stress on the...

    Name that contaminant

Have you ever heard of it passing through a whip? I've never messed with any of it, but wonder what state it would be in after slamming into the bottom of a tank during a fill.

    Name that contaminant

If anyone knows ornery, it has to be you. We've been the only facility to service the cylinders and none of our medium would leave a residue like this. It looks as though it was blown in dry, as there aren't any signs of puddling and the coating was roughly consistent.

    Name that contaminant

I felt kinda ornery after tasting it.

    Name that contaminant

I asked if they'd been diving Colombia lately, but that was not the case. The powder is tasteless.

    Name that contaminant

Cylinders are steel and there is no detectable contamination of the regs. I'm speculating that the deposit was created during the fill and it adhered to the walls and valve. It wipes away easily, but doesn't just fall off without some help. Aluminum Oxide doesn't wipe off like this and isn't...

    Name that contaminant

These are pics of valves removed from cylinders for VIS. They had only been filled at two locations, so the source of contamination was pretty easy to track. I assume it's filtration medium, but unsure of its exact composition. It's extremely fine and has no taste or odor. What is it?

    Hi, it's your instructor calling....

This isn't about selling, it's about diving. Would your response be the same if, as a new diver, if you were contacted about an upcoming dive and were invited to join?

Why can't you make a living as an Instructor?

I think most instructors are paid about what they're worth. I'm banking on potential divers understanding the value of a quality instructor, who is committed to their success. My observation is that most people don't have a clue of what makes a good class while they are in the process of...

    Need a lot of help

At this point, it's difficult to know what you'll end up needing. It's great to have the same gear for training that you'll be diving after certification, but after gaining knowledge and experience, you might find your initial purchases lacking. You should get an education on gear during the...
