    Rescue of DIR style Diver

Some would say the question should not be "How?", but "Why?". Horizontal and face down is the best and easiest way I've found to strip a weight belt. If I were in a hurry, I'd probably just cut the crotch strap and let the belt drop.

    PADI tables finally going away?

I think we're on the same page, but different paragraphs. Most of my posts relating to instruction are from the context of a mainstream, generic, 8 day course. There is no typical student and there could be a 14yo boy, 68yo man, 23yo man and a 30yo woman in the same class. I'd guess half of them...

    PADI tables finally going away?

For me, the tables are a tool. Divers have used them for decades and they are still widely in use today. It's a simple tool to teach, so why not give them that tool? My investment in lecture/discussion time consists of :20 on session 3, :10-20 session 4 and perhaps :10 on session 5. That's less...

New online certification courses - Good or bad?

I can and have taken and passed tests without even having read the material, so I wouldn't take an exam score as anything more than indication an individual tests well.

New online certification courses - Good or bad?

It's not like you go online and print yourself a card after a twenty minute quiz. At least, it shouldn't be. In concept, I'm all for it. The more informed my students are when they show up, the faster I can get them to the point they need to be for certification. If they demonstrate a solid...

Tattoos, cyber-stalkers, and random chat: tales from a derailed feedback thread

Crap, her cover was blown with her first post. Can you see me now?

Tattoos, cyber-stalkers, and random chat: tales from a derailed feedback thread

Bob, it's all a matter of perspective. I find a lot of tattoos really distasteful.

    Diving with an injured rib

If you can handle gearing up and getting into the water, you are likely to be okay. It's going to hurt, but if you're okay with pain.....

    Not having AOW

There are people I would not sell gas to, no matter what card they showed me.

    Buoyancy trick?

This is exactly right. In real diving, it's not very practical and you end up with more water in the BCD bladder than is typical when using standard technique.

Certified and Dangerous. Where do we go from here?

Wow, that's not good. Unfortunately, I think this is a sign of her having been rushed through the "program". Everyone learns and adapts to the new environment/experience at a different rate. Her kick should have been sorted out prior to OW. An inefficient kick is easy to spot and usually...

    PADI tables finally going away?

I think it has huge potential for being a bad thing for the student. As for turning all the academics over to online training; it's probably a good idea for many instructors. For me, I think there's a great deal I can add to the materials in terms of content and elaboration.

    Trim problem: foot heavy

Think of your body as a teeter totter. To the right of center of gravity(CG), you have buoyancy exerting an upward force. This buoyancy comes primarily from your lungs and BCD. To the left of CG, you have ballast exerting a downward force. This is mainly your weight belt, but can also be...

    NMOF & MOF, but MOB?

Properly, it's known as MSOF (Mask Strap On Forehead)

    Peeing in your wetsuit!

My personal policy is don't ask, don't tell, but I do encourage students to pee in their rental suits because "the last 200 people who rented the suit did, so you might as well". Suit sales are above norm for my class.

I'll choose Irony for $100, Alice.

What do you think about tagging Great White Sharks?

I think it's a worthwhile endeavor that will provide information which will ultimately benefit the sharks and provide us with a greater understanding of the species.

Warped Dive World Evolution - BP/W Subgroup Mindset

That's a shameful list to be on, but I'm going to post just one more time. It seems right that there should be someone with 14 posts.
