    Mask strap question....

Holy crap i thought i was bad about hyper-analyzing everything. Get a low profile mask that isnt a crappy walmart special that fits your face well and doesnt cause any pressure points on your face. Buy another one for back up. Just get a mask that is comfortable to wear and is easy for you to...

    Mask strap question....

wear a comfortable low volume mask. A broken mask is just an opportunity to practice spare mask replacement :)

Hehe, thanks :D I guess I should look more closely at what is taught before making judgments ;)

    ice diving

I am surprised at how ice diving is viewed as recreational diving. Why is ice diving not viewed as technical diving? Is it treated like a cavern dive? Are there rules in place to limit the distance you are allowed to get away from the hole in the ice making it recreational? Is the control...

    Pockets

GUE standards now a days is to put emergency stuff in the right pocket and equipment used for the dive in the left. So spare mask, wet notes, back up spool in the right pocket. Depending on the dive, line arrows, smb and spool maybe a bottle leash in the left.

Noob questions and comments about GUE Fundamentals class

"Beginning with the end in mind" is a much better reference then "Doing it Right" IMO. It's GUEs open water class book. I really like it. In fact I am making my wife read it in parallel with her PADI book as she goes through OW because I am such a kool-aid drinking freak. I would highly...

DIR, s-drills, consistency, and AI computers

Guy I think you may be missing a piece of the equation as to why it's safe to say that an AI computer will probably never be considered a foundational piece of "DIR" gear. GUE (and I imagine UTD) trains you from the get go to use your brain as your primary pressure gauge. What does that mean...

DIR, s-drills, consistency, and AI computers

What scenario requires you to need to have a precise measurement of how much gas you have? 100psi is as granular as you ever will need to be. Showing a dive buddy an unfamiliar wrist display to show PSI only causes confuses. You will rarely if ever need to show a team member your depth gauge...

DIR, s-drills, consistency, and AI computers

The AI computer is a toy from a DIR outlook, so yeah show the SPG if you have to show how much gas you have.

DIR, s-drills, consistency, and AI computers

AI is not part of GUE standard gear but I have seen other GUE trained divers use them. I always chuckle a bit when not to be mentioned diver would ram the transmitter against a bulkhead in a wreck. That AI should not be viewed as a primary piece of equipment regardless. It should be brain...

    Opinions Wanted: "Techreational" Trimix Diving

what on earth does that mean? Are they going on 100% o2 at the surface with no in water deco?

    Opinions Wanted: "Techreational" Trimix Diving

I was amazed in the difference in mental clarity when I started doing Helium in the rec range of 90 to 120. So much so that I will not enter a wreck in the 100ft range without it. Being inside a claustrophobic wreck is challenging while slightly narced. Doing an air share or a valve drill...

    Opinions Wanted: "Techreational" Trimix Diving

The physiological and psychological differences between a rec dive to 130 and a tech dive to 190 are huge. Trying to progress from rec to deep tech in short period of time in less then the classes most agencies do would be extremely difficult. Doing a recreational trimix class might be...

    Recommendations in Columbus, OH?

MY wife is starting OW with Aquatic Adventures in Hillard next week and I'll be joining the class as a refresher. I'll re-post an opinion of them after we start if you will like. Mark

    Experience vs certification

Most dive ops on Oahu have shallow afternoon trips to depths rarely greater then 60'. If you have never been deeper then 60' then I wouldn't recommend going deeper in a new dive environment unless it is in the confines of a class or unless you are already super confident in your dive abilities...

    Reasons to do "Minimum Deco"

One of the points of GUEs rec to tech mantra is "starting with the end in mind". In the spirit of that another advantage to doing Min Deco is it helps you grasp the concepts of controlled ascent rates needed for deco diving later on down the road. Yes this is a basic scuba section but GUE and...

GUE Stage Bottle at T1 Level

I agree, 45 mins is two bottle territory. I really dont like GUEs approach compared to UTDs approach to bridge the Tech 1 and tech 2 ranges.
