the document you link categorizes tech diving with helium as high risk because; ".....divers are diving deeper with helium and Trimix than with compressed air and therefore are exposed to all the associated problems of depth (other than nitrogen narcosis and breathing resistance). Barotrauma and...
What perceived danger does Helium bring in your mind? Faster off gassing potential is addressed with the deco profile and HPNS doesnt really come into play until you start doing fast 100fpm+ descents to 600 feet or more. What risks does helium bring that is more potential for accidents at...
"There is no question that there is an individual susceptibility to the effects of nitrogen
narcosis. This may be due to individual accommodation or “learning to cope”
with a reduction in anxiety and recognition by the individual of his own signs and
symptoms. Thus highly trained and...
Ahh man you beat me to it! I was about to post on this study.
To summarize some more there research and others past research demonstrates that divers exhibit some level of narcosis on air from 100ft and on. 200ft appears to be the limit for personal tolerance and 250ft places divers in a...
You appear to have a ton of in water experience. Unfortunately old school experience isnt that impressive to modern tech divers who as a whole are overly cautious and completely non-mucho. A few things have changed since 1984 :)
Finding yourself face down in the water on the surface equates to finding yourself on the moon?
There are many events that could cause you to end up face down, passed out on the surface. A lot of which could totally be outside your control. What is irrefutable is that if you are passed out...
sorry my selective reading strikes again :)
I am a big fan of absorbing as much info as possible on any given subject but I would be a disaster in the water if my primary means of learning was from books and not from instructors.
It's fine to learn the academics of tech diving from various resources but keep in mind that like you say tech diving isnt rocket science its more like a bunch of loose ideas of how to not get into trouble. While you can learn a lot, say about decompression theory, unless you know how to apply...
While the accident that lead to the incident cant be blamed on solo diving if he was truly solo diving without another soul nearby then he would be dead.
Regardless of what caused the accident its pretty apparent that he couldn't have self-rescued himself while passed out face first in the...
I've never been truly happy with any pencil I've used underwater. wooden ones break to easy. the pop a points are hard to find and probably wont work with gloves. What else is out there?
Anyone tried these? Xit 404 - Aqua Pencil
Let me know what I should try next!
MODS feel free to...
I may not be clear. I was using the term DCI which includes barotrauma in it's definition. Obviously there is little chance of DCS due to a poor CESA from depth but there is a fair risk of DCI if a diver ascends to fast and isn't doing a good job of holding his air way open. Though I would...
One thing I've noticed with divers that are trained to grab dive buddies back up reg is they tend to almost always rotate it upside down instead of turning it to keep it up right. This leads to those few wet breathes which causes them to panic more. At this point they are debating grabbing...
Hey Jay,
Dont overlook the importance of improving your buddy awareness. Buddy awareness was one of the weakest skills I had while transitioning to tech diving and it seems to be an issue for most people.
Unless you have your heart set on solo diving (which I dont recommend) then the sooner...
Fundies was the only recreational level class that was actually worth the cost to me.
You could jump right into a deco procedures/advance nitrox course but I would advise against it. I've seen a few divers do this and after completing the course they realize they dont have the basic skills...
Bob Sherwood must be going easy on you. I seem to remember at the end of the day of my tech 1 classes I found myself fully clothed in the shower huddled in the corner crying!
Good luck on your class :D

Im up for lake Erie.... after I get back up to speed with diving a drysuit. Id probably be a risk to dive with until I figure out how to dive dry again :)
Hey StreetDoc, once spring time rolls around I'll probably be in the ohio quarries diving with my my newly certified dive buddy, my wife.
If you make it down to any of the ohio quarries let me know and I'll try and join you.

proper free-diving technique should not involve hyperventilation. Big difference between a free-diving breath up and intentional hyperventilation. Personally i doubt doing a free-diving breath up before the dive would help but who knows.
Like others have said the relaxation aspect of...
You make a fair point Guy. If say in 10 years AI computers are cheap and reliable enough that they worked wonderfully all the time I think it still wont be GUE standards simply because of GUE's foundation in stage diving. Maybe one day transmitters could be cheap enough where you even have one...
