    New England Divers?

For CT the best options are Jamestown, RI (FT Wetherill) or Newport. If you don't mind shallow, Stonington Point is okay for a novice. Orbit Marine runs charters in the Bridgeport area. Generally, the Long Island Sound is low visibility and most people try to head up into RI. Another...

Question Easily accessible shore dives in South Florida

I took my daughter to LDBS last summer for some diving. We dove at the snorkel trail several times, entering just south of the Pier. Most of the time the entry and exit were fine. We did a night dive and there was a ripping long shore current. By the time we called the dive, we had a pretty...

New Shearwater Dive Computer - 2024!

I would have bought this if it was available when I bought mine. The compass would have been nice. It was the one thing I wanted that the OG didn’t

    Lessons Most frightening moments

He was making a shore dive to 25m (planned depth) without a computer? That would have been a huge red flag. I can seen not having a DC and doing a shore dive with a hard bottom at, say, 15 or 20m, but that he could get down to 30 or 40m without a measure of time, depth or deco is pretty scary.

    What Should I have done?

I try to be on the surface with about 750 rock bottom. That will give me gas to inflate my BCD, get squared for any surface swim and a little bit of emergency air if something comes up. I usually plan to exit with about 1000 psi.

Active Divers over the age of 50

I am 60 and hoping I am going to dive at least till 70. Last weekend, we screwed the pooch and ended up with a 300 yard surface swim in open water, full gear.

Question Used drysuit boots too big, how important is it?

If they are integrated boots and the price it right, I would just do what others have said, insoles and socks. When buying something like a used drysuit, perfect is the enemy of the good. Boots that are too tight are worse than too big.

    DIY GPS dive tracking

The Strava premium makes time stamps. I haven't really worried about time stamping locations (I am a cheap bastard). In the subscription version, I am pretty sure you can. I am not using it for much other than diving and the occasional bike ride. Strava, without a cell phone connection will...

Info Impact of a drysuit flood

The worst part for me was realizing that piece of crap was not reliable enough to make plans with. Aqualung fusion constantly had problems with seals and I had been told by the shop that it could be upgraded to user replaceable and it wasn't. Total waste of money.

    2024 Newport, RI diving.

It was a little nippy. I could have done a second dive with an hour or two to warm up.

    Custom weights

I have both soft shot and hard weights. The advantage of soft shot is it doesn't chafe in the corners of weight pouches. Hard weights are much denser. The plastic bags will chafe against the outside fabric and the inside lead. My guess is they won't last and will leak shot over time and...

    DIY GPS dive tracking

I have been getting a steady stream of people asking how we make the maps tracking our dive paths. It is not particularly difficult or expensive, so I thought I would share what I have learned doing it over the past few years. To start, we are not taking a GPS or similar device under water...

    2024 Newport, RI diving.

Today was the first real dive of the season. I went for a dive at Kings Beach in Newport. We stopped and took a look at Green Bridge before heading to King's Beach. For any one that dives there, they have made some changes to the roadway. They've widened it on the side facing the ocean. To...

    Check this vintage ad out...

I was certified in 1980 with NAUI and did a Assistant instructor course in 1983. At no time was I expected to swim three miles on the surface in full gear. We did unwater the length of an olympic swimming pool. I towed another diver and did mouth to snorkel (he was a West Point linebacker...

Info Impact of a drysuit flood

I’v seen those elbows and never trusted them… That’s why I never listen to the people that say “a balanced rig shouldn’t need ditchable weights”

    Advice on New England Diving

Folly is an excellent site, but the entry is tough on the ankles. The beach is mostly large cobble and walking in with gear can be hairy.

Info Impact of a drysuit flood

To lose both your BCD and completely flood your suit probably means your were run over by motor boat prop. You will bleed out with a couple of minutes... Drop your weights and hopefully it will make body recovery a little easier. You have three layers of redundant buoyancy, dry suit, wing and...

    Advice on New England Diving

Cape Ann has some good near Boston diving. The water is pretty cool, but 7mm will get you through it okay. Rockport has a few easy dives that consistently have good conditions (15-25' visibility). Back Beach and Front Beach are pretty popular, easy dives ( have not done them, but I hear they...
