Best Hood that doesn't squeeze my head like a ripe melon

I got myself a custom 7mm hood from the local custom shop. I love the thing to bits, wouldn't give a second thought to recommending you do the same.

    Types of kicking

I've not tried a side kick yet but can't really imagine using it (it looks like it's faster/less labour intensive to fin backwards and shuffle over)

Change in buoyancy from 12l to 15l cylinder

Must be my misunderstanding. I took it that you calling them unstable and uncomfortable meant that they were not an 'acceptable' (for lack of a better word) tank. Seems like we are not far off the same opinion anyway.

Change in buoyancy from 12l to 15l cylinder

I tend to agree. Although I disagree that it is an issue that good control in the water wouldn't be able to handle with hardly a thought. The other option is do like me and go sidemount, even lower center of gravity and all the more stable. I think the issue is, side or back mount doubles...

Change in buoyancy from 12l to 15l cylinder

I often use a 15L tank for a 2 hr dive (20-10m). This provides plenty of gas when diving a 32% mix (or more), it's nice not having to rush too much. I have found with my tanks that I need to add around 1kg with the 15l. I think there is some variation between tanks as my buddy doesn't change...

    Need Advice For Sydney

I think the prudent question is... do you like long or short dives? Also, are you planning single or double dives? This will impact thermal protection needs considerably. If you're anything like me you'll move like a snail and stay down there all day. Have a look on Michael's website. He has a...

    Need Advice For Sydney

Hi Laurie, First things first, have a read of Michaels website - Michael McFadyen's Scuba Diving Web Site The diving in Sydney is great all year. Better vis in winter than summer, although it is fine all year around. Sounds like you'll want the warmer water anyway though. You will want a 5mm...

Aluminum 80 tank has more liters than steel 80 tank?

Do the calculations in metric. For example an 11.1L tank (water capacity) filled to 207 bar = 11.1*207 = 2 297.7 litres If the same tank has a poor fill to 180 bar then the calculation is - 11.1*180 = 1998 litres The same method works for all tanks and can easily be done on the fly.

    Nitrox: Should I be worried?

I'd probably not trust most of the dive shop workers I know to get it right without having checked it myself. I don't think there will be many in here who will suggest not checking it yourself. But if push came to shove some might consider it (depending who filled it). For example I don't have...

    Wanna know best breath technique

I thought it did, but I can't seem to work it out right now - I find the app lousy too. I only use it so I can backup in case I ever wanted to look at my logs. I might need to look into the Dive log app too, I have had it recommended to me too.

Go into your dive on the app and swipe across to 'gear details', it's there (android).

    Wanna know best breath technique

I think they are 11.1 or 11.4L volume (look on the tank), so 1 bar/min equates to 1 volume of the tank (11.4l/min SAC). You can add tank volume in your dive log on the shearwater cloud app and it will calculate for you.

    Wanna know best breath technique

1 Bar on what size tank? 12L? I sit between 8-9L/min. My best being 6.3L/min SAC recently with my new sidemount rig (twin 7L), so I'm hopeful I can maintain that. All quite doable, I'm 80kg, 173cm, 24 year old male. Remember, be lazy

Can varying your SAC rate reduce/increase the likelihood of DCS?

Teach yourself how to solo dive and just complete the dive yourself, your buddy should be able to get back on the boat or to shore themselves. I always find the bigger issue is when dive operations limit dive time. Now that is endlessly frustrating (especially if there is no good reason). This...

    Zeagle Recon Fins

I've done a dive in the recon fins. I found them to give good propulsion (better than my novas at the time) without too much strain on your ankles/legs. They were not much good for back fining, I can't recall if I even tried a frog kick. In summary, if you don't mind having a bit less control...

    Wanna know best breath technique

Working on breathing pattern helps a lot. I breath in quickly, to a comfortable point. Followed by a slow trickle out. When I need/want another breath I exhale quickly as much as is comfortable then repeat. Bottom line though, if you need a breath take one. Air is cheap, go crazy. The bottom...

Roadtrip! Monterey CA to Detroit... via Florida

Hi all, I am traveling to the US with my parents to visit my sister, I will be spending a month with them traveling from Denver to New Mexico. I will buy a car when I land in Denver. My plan is to head off on my own for a month, or two. Firstly to Monterey, travel down the coast diving, then...

    Dive Trip Planning, HELP!

Thanks for that Dan. I am traveling with my parents/sister for the first month then heading off on my own. I am currently thinking I will skip mexico, I can dive in asia much more cheaply and fly there from home cheaply. It will take extra insurance to drive mexico which adds to it I imagine...
