    Kona and Kohala reef health?

This is great news! I did find an article today that indicated that things are rebounding but didn't say what it looks like at present (it had some science-y talk in it and was over my head but seemed encouraging!). (here's the link for the article: Feature Article: The Great Hawaiian Coral...

    Kona and Kohala reef health?

We're looking into a trip to the Big Island and would be staying near Kona & Kohala. I've been looking at videos and pictures on the web - and doing some reading - and it appears that in 2015 there was a significant bleaching event and the reef is in rough shape in these areas. What I read says...

Mask, corrected vision, looking for suggestions

I do have a bifocal in one lens. I may end up having to wear one mask when I want to take pictures and the HUD otherwise. :(

Mask, corrected vision, looking for suggestions

I use a heads up display mask and have corrected vision for both near and far. This is challenging because the readout is on one side, making the actual lens about 1/4 shorter from top to bottom. For me, this means that I only have correction for close-up in one eye, but correction for distance...

Diving after 55 - split from: Tavernier fatality - Florida Keys

I'm happy to see this thread - and encouraged. I'm 56 and my husband (DB) is almost 63. One takeaway from this thread - for me - is the reminder to be even more invested in my husband's health! An incident at depth doesn't just affect me - or him - it's both of us. Yes, I knew this already ...

I need your help! Survey on women/gender in diving.

I had an interesting conversation with a male staff member at our local gun range, about whether men or women are better shots. He said, hands down, WOMEN are better shots. When I asked him why, he said "they listen"! So perhaps the reason the diver master made sure he made eye contact with the...

Found - Wedding Band in St Lucia

This was posted on Facebook: "We found a treasure at the bottom of the ocean yesterday in Saint Lucia. The wedding band is engraved MT 12-16-2012 and was found in the water at Sandals Regenecy La Toc. It is yellow and white gold. The jeweler's stamp is "sja" and links to a jeweler in New...

Is Halls Diving Academy the way to go?

He has a lot of mechanical aptitude (which I'm forever thankful for as we never has to hire anyone to fix things that break around the house - including hvac). Would it be necessary for him to have the backing of a shop to get the sort of training you are talking about - with specific...

    Lights

We have several lights and the one I like the best for day and looking into cracks and crevices has a focused beam of light - more of a spotlight than covering a large area. It's an Aquatic Aqua LED 250 Lumen Torch - they make better ones now, I'm sure. But the key (for me) is to have a...

Is Halls Diving Academy the way to go?

Ok, I know that a company's advertising may be misleading, but the brochure that we have says that the Equipment Repair Technician Program training confers a 'diploma' after the 48 hour course. Is that 'diploma' essentially worthless? I would think that during the 48 hours of training they are...

Is Halls Diving Academy the way to go?

Does anyone have an opinion about their repair technician training - not instructor training? My husband has toyed with the idea of just doing their repair tech training program. Thanks. (I didn't read the entire thread and apologize in advance if this was already addressed).

Just reached 200+ dives and dropped some lead!

I wish I could say there was a plan and it worked - but it was more a matter of a eureka moment and trusting that if I took off the weight I would still have enough - and eureka! I did!

Just reached 200+ dives and dropped some lead!

For me, I think it was just a matter of putting in the time so that I finally relaxed enough to not hold so much air in my lungs. It's a nice feeling. You'll get there too - probably sooner than you think. :)

Added a crotch strap to my Zena - nice improvement!

I love my Zena, but I have a large rib cage and if I tighten it enough to really stay in place it cuts into my ribs (the top strap rides right under my rib cage). I mentioned it to a crew member on the Juliet (Liza) and she gave me a crotch strap to try - and it was wonderful! I can tighten it...

Just reached 200+ dives and dropped some lead!

I just got back from a live aboard trip where I reached 204 dives and went from 10 to 6 pounds of weight! It seems I 'turned a corner' on my buoyancy, and I'm really excited. I think I could have gone to 4 pounds but I didn't want to push it. Yay! My husband, who outweighs me by 90 pounds is...

Wife against me getting Cave Cert (full)..suggestions?

Just my opinion - and I'm a woman and a wife - if you don't both agree then I think it's a no-go. The fact that she would worry is evidence that she cares deeply about your safety. If she is going to be in a state of anxiety every time you dive is it worth it to you?

    Dealing with long hair

I use a spandex beanie that I got from the local Harley Davidson shop. I wet my hair, put conditioner on it and slick it back and then put the beanie on from front to back, making sure I've gathered up all the stray hairs. It works great. If you don't have a local shop maybe you could order one...
