Thoughts for drone video on a Liveaboard

You might also check with the captain to see if he/she is OK with you operating a drone off the boat.

Any downside in lapse of DAN membership?

I asked DAN if I could let my membership lapse and then start it again this fall, when we plan to travel again for diving. They said no problem and no extra charges or anything, just happy we plan to renew in the future.

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

Thanks for the reply. We do look at things differently, but I understand where you're coming from. My tendency would be to write a job description that included all those things you're looking for in an instructor so, hopefully, people who do things differently and don't want to change don't...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

I'm not a scuba instructor, nor a school teacher but have written and conducted courses for adults. I'm not sure why you think most instructor candidates would crash and burn. I assume we're talking about certified instructors and you're assessing them as employees or contractors for a dive shop.

Just wondering....did any of the candidates ask beforehand as to the type of assessment you wanted to see ? Did any ask if they could bring more than one example ?

If you put aside any form of competency/skill testing the only way you can assess a potential employee you don't know is by what they have done in the past. You can sometimes determine their depth of experience in an interview but there's no way to reliably assess competence. New grads, even...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

The point I was trying to make by bringing up other activities that could result in death or serious injury was that SCUBA is one of the few that has mandatory instruction. The others depend on participants educating themselves...the onus is on the person who chooses to take up the activity...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

We do often get into discussions about the quality of scuba training and how that should/could be improved or how a few instructors provide a much higher quality of training with increased expectations of their students. My few years of experience with scuba instructors/divemasters and...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

Here in Vancouver there are really only two temperature ranges for diving. The heated pool or the ocean which is usually mid 40s year round. So yes the mask R&R is a bit of a shocker. The saving grace is that the open water training environment is on an extremely gentle slope and my class was...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

We took our AOW in the summer in Vancouver. The viz at that time of the year is nameplate....I couldn't see my hand on my fully extended arm holding onto the buoy anchor chain. Our night dive was the same conditions. The instructors (both of whom are very competent) inadvertently brought a...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

All my OW class were in drysuits. I've only been with one diver in BC waters who wore a wetsuit and he was a really hardy guy who was originally from Nova Scotia and didn't mind being a bit cold (or didn't feel it as much as most people). We did a pool orientation with the drysuits and could...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

I said in a previous post that I would have some questions if I were the defandant's lawyer....in this case I'm talking about the instructor, not the dive shop. How did the deceased diver represent her experience level ? Were details provided or did she present as a certified diver only ? Why...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

It certainly looks like gross negligence, based on the suit prepared and submitted by the plaintiff's lawyer, which is what you would expect. I'm not saying he's wrong or missreprenting the facts, but I can see the defendants' lawyers having some questions. There are things missing at this...

Suit filed in case of "Girl dead, boy injured at Glacier National Park

One thing....I understood from the brief that the diver had weight pockets in her BCD with 20-24 lbs of lead. It implied that she hadn't been show how to release them to drop the weights.

    Anti-anxiety meds

I think it would depend on which meds you're taking. I take beta blockers and antidepressants and have no problem diving with either. In the past I have also taken quetiapine and done a few dives while on it....not sure I'd want to do that long term. I have also taken ativan for a short...

WtF: The Decline in Scuba Participation

Thanks for the original post. It was quite thought provoking. For my family, even though 4 of us are certified divers (myself, my wife, 4 kids and partners) the above quote definitely applies.

Question on Changing BP/W Webbing in the Future

As I'm sure you know the BP/W system is designed to be modular. You can use any backplate or wing with whatever harness system you prefer. I have two setups. One is a Dive Rite wing and SS backplate. The other is a Deep6 wing with HOG aluminum backplate. Both use the basic harness...

    Boat Diving Etiquette

Mostly good suggestions. However, experienced divers who are also considerate human beings already follow these "rules" as long as circumstances permit. New or less experienced divers, who are considerate human beings, risk tying themselves in knots trying to absorb everything after the OP...

    Cabo Pulmo - 1st Week Sept 2021

The dive shop has to be licensed or certified by the park to conduct dives at Cabo Pulmo. That's why an op from Cabo San Lucas has to use a dive shop local to Cabo Pulmo. The park only allows a certain number of trips and divers per week at each of the dive sites. Each op gets to pick one of...
