On "which Schraeder," does it matter? Are you thinking Air2?
I'm confused on the duck dive: That's a surface maneuver, isn't it? Or do you mean using it underwater to go deeper quickly?
I teach going vertical and pressing the deflate button on the power inflator with the right hand...
I'm getting caught up on old issues of Alert Diver magazine and came across a story that caught me off guard. The victim writes about having a runaway inflation of a BCD that was near-lethal. Thankfully, she recovered. But in the story she writes "We did not know it is OK to disconnect the...
I do something similar: On OW 4, I tell students they're leading the dive. Pretend I'm not present. I'll position above and behind them and only intervene if something looks dangerous or they're headed the wrong way and it's going to make the dive either riskier or just unnecessarily less...
Sad, as always.
It'd be interesting to see if the regulator checked out and if the air was clean. If so, I'm thinking a medical event that made it feel hard to breathe. The DCI might be from a rapid ascent?
Question for the dive medicos: If you stop breathing underwater (respiratory...
Definitely not dumping on the DM, but it seems a legitimate question when a guide "loses" a diver. (That is, I'm more asking the question than accusing the DM.)
But in this case, it's very understandable. The DM trusted you to be on your own for a bit. (I've had dives like that, taking...
I'm left wondering what happened with the DM? This was a paid for, guided, dive. Shouldn't the DM have been keeping track? Maybe he or she know you and trusted you on your own? (I've had guided dives where the DM trusted me to be on my own at a distance he wouldn't have ordinarily tolerated.)
I'd be skeptical. There's a thread on this that seems to suggest breathable tri-lams aren't as robust: Scubapro's Evertech Dry Breathable Drysuit: Your opinion please...
If the suit works like Gore-Tex, it's not based on osmotic pressure but simply size of opening: The pores in Gore-Tex are...
Quick question, when you say "osmotic pressure" do you mean water pressure? (Osmotic pressure has a specific meaning that is not what I think you intend. If you did then I suppose it would somehow depend on salinity of the water you're in compared to some thing on the other side of some...
Ah, of course. Carbon fibre vs. acrylic. Duh. The proven submersibles had acrylic domes of course.
As for the web site, well, engine ears aren't always good with words.
My non-diving daughter mentioned this to me and I guess I'm a little surprised:
Billionaire planning new submersible
Any thoughts? On the one hand, plastic failed miserably once. On the other, this fellow is wanting to jump through all the safety hoops before putting people in it.
(And not...
Need to normalize to number of people in the water, not just shoreline. Washington and Oregon States have lots of shoreline, but relatively few people swimming and paddleboarding in salt water due to cold temps.
(A lack of shark species with a history of biting may also keep the numbers down.)
That's your spouse's story and they're sticking to it.
(Heard a story about how a fishing boat captain in Alaska lost his leg when his wife shot him in the thigh with a shotgun. Apparently his wife found out about an affair and, as he put it, "She missed her target.")
Sounds like classic sinus barotrauma for sure. I can usually clear mine, but during allergy season Flonase (fluticasone propionate) is my best friend. You can get it over the counter in the USA, though this hasn't always been true and you should check with your doctor. In my case, a doc...
If for some reason you can't get it hydro tested, I wouldn't fill it and keep it around the shop or transport it in a vehicle. Maybe I'm overly cautious and given to wild imagination, but imagine something like this:
You're prudently driving down the highway when some [insert stereotype of...
A couple months ago I "rescued" a full face mask/snorkel combo off Cove 2 in Seattle. Given where I found it (deeper water, not at or near the exit beach) I'm guessing the following happened:
Either an open water swimmer or snorkeler checking out the breakwater/retaining wall (not sure what...
