    Question Vaccines for Indonesia

Indeed it is! Refreshing when you're in some place particularly hot and humid.

"older" not-very-experienced diver and a prospective-diver adult son looking for advice on where to go

I'm another vote for Roatan. I've dived Coz and Belize (a lot) as well as Roatan. For novices looking at boat diving, I love Roatan. Pretty much every dive post-training is a boat dive. It's relatively inexpensive, and the dives generally are the perfect combination of safety and interesting...

Info Please help to identify this creature

iNaturalist first suggestion is Elysia, but I'm skeptical. After Elysia, it's suggestion is Acanthozoon. (Watch spelling.) I'm pretty convinced it's Acanthozoon (a flatworm), but I'm not perfect as my wife reminds me.

    Question Vaccines for Indonesia

Make sure you're current on all the standard vaccines. These days for kids born in the US, that's going to be things like polio, measles, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B. Us older folks had to get the hepA and hepB shots later in life. If you're old enough, you might want to get another measles...

Deco Musings: What is an experienced diver?

I think your initial question is interesting in that context matters. In your case, it sounds like you're really asking "am I an experienced diver?" But what's your yard/meter stick for measuring this? It could be any number of things: 1. A person who has "experienced" diving might be...

    printable copy of dive tables?

Nice to see the typical de-railing of a thread where a simple question was asked and answered. That said, and in defense of tables consider the following: 1. Your computer dies after dive one. To be safe, you should either end your dive day or (if you have data, which you might not if your...

Question Local divers, how do you motivate yourself when the weather is crap?

I like the colder weather. Fewer divers competing for parking spots, and the water is often clearer. Now if it's a howling gale, that's another matter. But even high winds in our part of the world aren't a huge deal. There's not a lot of fetch for the waves to build up over, and there's...

Squeaky ear when equalizing ( new diver )

I think Tanika's concern is on the safety side of things. Taking it a week before to eliminate congestion isn't a safety issue. I know my dive agency specifically says "don't use decongestants to dive" but I'm wondering what others are teaching divers. This link purportedly describes what...

    Drysuit Specialty course tips?

Does the converse hold? Learn to use the suit in case a crab bites a hole in your BCD?

    Drysuit Specialty course tips?

Put me in the "do what they instructor suggests" camp. They'll see you in a dry suit, observe you using it, and give pointers that random people on the internet can't really do. I personally use dry suit only for buoyancy control underwater. But there are key factors to that, none of which...

Squeaky ear when equalizing ( new diver )

The squeaking is likely just the air making its way through a narrow Eustachian tube. If there's no pain, it's likely no big deal. I strongly concur with DreadnoughtNH about "ear beer." I just use 70% rubbing alcohol, but an equal mix of this and the clearest white vinegar you can find is...

    Battery charger recommendation for TG-6?

I tried one like it, but after awhile the batteries wouldn't stay clipped in because the springs failed. I went to one that lays flat, with batteries inserting from above, figuring gravity would push the batteries against the spring-loaded pins. But now it's failing too.....

Thanks, but I'm often charging multiple batteries at once.

Sorry, those were supposed to be links to the units in Amazon.

    Battery charger recommendation for TG-6?

The subject line is the short story. Anybody have a favorite battery charger for a TG-6? (I think it's the same battery as the TG-5 as well.) Long story: I'm frustrated by having battery chargers fail, usually while in some remote corner of the world. Granted it's only happened twice in the...

Error Diver drowned after accidentally falling in lake with gear on

@johndiver999 nailed it on the regulator sweep issue. It just isn't applicable in this scenario. The victim went over the edge of a 5 m dropoff. If a sweep (or what have you) is going to work anywhere, it should work in 5 m. A friend of mine used to say opinions are like a certain bodily...

Marine Life Teen diver bitten by shark, loses leg in Belize

I have one in the first aid kit I carry to US-based dive sites. I was just debating whether I need it on an upcoming trip, though the diving we'll be doing is shore-based with no boats operating in the vicinity.

Question What's the deal with the PADI site being down for nearly a week, now?

Apparently it's down again? I kept getting to the point of uploading a photo for a student I wanted to certify, and it froze my browser. Tried again, same thing. Now I can't even get that far.... Edit: And just like that after an hour or so it seems to be back up. FWIW, PADI's online...

Marine Life Teen diver bitten by shark, loses leg in Belize

Though I've spent a lot of time in Belize (further south, mostly) and I'm a marine biologist, sharks aren't my thing either. (/DISCLAIMER) I've seen lemons as well in the vicinity of Half Moon Caye, so might add that to the list of possible suspects. A guy I knew decades ago got bit by a bull...

What to do with a runaway BCD inflator

Good question. I'd imagine it's easier but I might play around with this to see. I try to avoid having a stuck inflator.... I'm thinking it would be because once you start to release it the pressure should tend to push the hose and inflator apart. But I don't know.
