    Equalization the Science and Biology

I had downloaded the video for future viewing but hadn't viewed it 'til now. So thanks for posting. In addition to the video, Dr. Kay's website has a PDF that reiterates and summarizes some of the information in the video. I recommend reading that as well as watching the video. Doc's Diving...

Well done. Thanks for sharing it with us.

    Equalization the Science and Biology

Being underwater is an alien experience, and I would imagine for most new divers, it creates stress. Certainly, some people try it and give up because they are so uncomfortable with being underwater. Stress can easily cause tension in various parts of the body, even clenching. So could increased...

    LDS arbitrary tank fill rules.

I don't get the point of this project. Certainly, where you live, you know which shops will do what, don't you? So don't go to the shops you know won't fill your tank. If you are going to dive in an area where you don't know the shops, wouldn't it be easier just to call (or email) the shops...

What kind of gear do I really need?

Check out this thread: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/basic-scuba-discussions/476857-getting-started-cheap.html There's a lot of good advice in that thread. For many, many years, the only equipment I owned was a mask, snorkel, and dive computer. Resist the urge to get completely geared up...

Make dive wing retractable (or smaller when not fully inflated)

You are only half correct. A balanced rig is one that: 1. allows the diver to maintain neutral buoyancy at 15 feet of depth with a nearly empty tank (500 psi) and 2. has ballast that can be ditched to allow the diver to swim up to the surface from depth with a full tank (or tanks) and with...

When to Turn Around on a Dive

And if you go to the last page of the article, there is a link at the bottom that allows you to download the entire article in PDF (instead of copying page by page).

    Seizures and diving

If a diver has had a seizure and then been cleared to dive, would a full face mask be a good idea for that diver?

    Embolism bubbles

Here is why I suggested that the gas in an AGE would be air, not nitrogen. Diving Science is a book written by Michael Strauss, MD, and Igor Aksenov, MD, PhD. Both authors have excellent credentials in the field of hyperbaric medicine. On page 24, Diving Science says (emphasis mine): In...

    Cheap entry level wrist computer

I have to say that for the price the feature list is quite impressive. The most important difference IMO is whether the diver wants a more conservative or less conservative algorithm. I assume that the Zoop's RGBM is more conservative and the Hollis's Buhlmann less so.

    Embolism bubbles

Since the query was about embolism, wouldn't the bubble in that case be air and not nitrogen?

    Cheap entry level wrist computer

The usual suspects for entry-level dive computers are the Mares Puck, Suunto Zoop, and Cressi Leonardo. I have the Zoop and did a review of it here (with some subsequent posts comparing it to the Puck and Leonardo)...

    Shingles + diving liveaboard trip

From the Harvard Health Blog in 2011 (emphasis added by me): Shingles can strike twice. Will the shingles vaccine help? - Harvard Health Blog - Harvard Health Publications From WebMD: Risk of Shingles Recurrence Is Low None of this is to say that one should not be vaccinated. The CDC says...

    Shingles + diving liveaboard trip

No, I am not a physician, and yes, I can back it up. I'll let a physician back it up, however, so it's a shorter discussion.

    Shingles + diving liveaboard trip

Likelihood of recurrence is quite low, and at the time of the outbreak or shortly thereafter is probably not the best time for shingles vaccination. The immune system is already reacting to the virus, and all a vaccination does is stimulate the immune system to react against a virus (or other...

    Shingles + diving liveaboard trip

Subsequent to developing chicken pox, a person is subject to developing shingles (usually many years later). Shingles is a sequela, or secondary effect, to chicken pox.

    how to ascend/ descend

Some people have better plumbing than others. Me, I start equalizing on the surface and do it more or less continuously down to a depth of about 15 or 20 feet.

    Medical form: practical/ethical quandary

When you say "all of you" keep in mind that some of us (me in particular) emphasized that once we have consulted with a physician and gotten medical clearance to dive, it's our position that it is then none of the dive op's business. Since you appeared to have missed my mentioning this (several...

    Medical form: practical/ethical quandary

Maybe yes and maybe no. I just looked at the PADI medical statement (which appears to be promulgated by RSTC and adopted by PADI). The medical statement includes the questionnaire and has the following statement (emphasis added by me): Most students would not understand that they don't need...

    Medical form: practical/ethical quandary

In the interest of not talking at cross-purposes, let's recognize that there is a difference between: 1. answering questions posed by a dive operator transporting you to a dive site and answering questions from someone who has an instructor-student relationship with you. 2. divers who have...
