Why do we teach flutter kick at all?

So that is a NO vote? Bummer.

Why do we teach flutter kick at all?

My extremely limited knowledge of frog kicking (watching youtube vids) makes it look like a very slow way to move. I also find some of the vids of people frog kicking and the like to be extremely impressive. A lot of precise control on display. My question is, can frogs and flutters coexist...

    why enter a cave

I wish it was one I had never experienced. Not going into underwater caves, but in equally stupid ways.

    why enter a cave

I certainly mentioned it in a list of other activities where people regularly die by getting into a situation far riskier to them than they appreciated, along with deserts, boating, and a few other activities that were not meant to be a complete list. It is possible that you picked out the only...

    why enter a cave

What do you define as great risk? I know of one death just last month of a search/rescue person who was out looking for hiker bodies. It was far from the first, and won't be the last. I think you are wrong in thinking that's a difference.

    Out of Air on Descent

I agree with your reaction there. 100% I'd be pissed. But it wouldn't have anything to do with valves. I work at the same company as someone - not willingly and I'm counting the days/working to shorten the time until he gets fired - that was driving down the street in front of our offices and...

    why enter a cave

Actually, no, that wasn't my assumption - that is what I was claiming was false. You are right, though, that without accurate entry vs live exit numbers by classification there are real limits to what points can be drawn.

    why enter a cave

How is it any different than all the people who go hiking in the desert without knowing what they are in for? Or driving 4x4 trails, or climbing rocks/trees, or boating, or walking through urban areas, or running marathons? Think about that last one. Every year in the US about 5 people will...

    DFW Lake Divers?

I was at CSSP that weekend too! That's when/where I did my OW dives. I don't know the exact temps but it was plenty warm! Dive club is a good idea. I haven't figured out that scene yet but I need to. You guys meet in Arlington, right? That's a ways from where I work. :(

Introduction and looking for recommendations on gear

You would think so, but.... One way of looking at it is that the BCD or BP/W form a system with all of the weight and buoyancy at various distances from a center, then you and anything attached to you (weights and the like, ignoring the BCD/backplate) forms another system with your own...

    Minimalist Configuration, where to start

Since I said one thing and two more experienced divers said another, I have a question. Is it really unsafe to assume that a Dive Rite pad will attach to a Dive Rite plate? Or that Dive Rite backplate accessories will work with Dive Rite backplates in general? The OP asked about within brands...

    Minimalist Configuration, where to start

Not sure what you are envisioning. We aren't talking about pipe insulation style padding. ;) I don't think it matters either way mind you, and it shouldn't be a decision point, but the padded strap is not exactly bulky.

    Minimalist Configuration, where to start

I'll take a pass at this and if I make mistakes hopefully we'll both learn something. :) The basic Hogarthian harness/backplate will fit a lot of people, though from what I've read very tall people (taller than us) will want a longer plate. Reaching the valve... In tight spaces a bump can...

    DFW Lake Divers?

I (warning:freshly certified/total noob with an OW cert) am planning to head out to CSSP on Saturday (8/11/12) if I can find a buddy. If anyone wants a buddy/an excuse to dive (and has the message about my total noobocity ;)), talk to me. :D

    Out of Air on Descent

I'm a bit taken aback by this. 1) Are you (or whatever diver receives this treatment) are using non-standard gear? So what looks open for you looks closed for 99% of the gear they see? 2) It is a way of griefing you that won't come back at them? ("I didn't change his valve! I thought it was...

    Minimalist Configuration, where to start

I read his post as he does NOT want air2. As for integrated weight pouches, there are several such systems. http://www.diverite.com/products/catalog/pockets/ac3216 http://www.golemgear.com/p-276-golem-gear-integrated-weight-system-for-backplate.aspx There is at least one other that bolts to...

    Minimalist Configuration, where to start

Start minimalist. :) A few points that may or may not be worth much: 1) Don't worry about future configurations. Yes, maybe you can sell one wing, buy another and all the gear for a new configuration, and make a switch for a net cost of $100, but unless you are solving a problem with the new...

    Out of Air on Descent

I suppose that would be an interesting conversation - the student on one of his first OW dives confronting a dive master for doing what she probably thought was a reasonable safety check. Obviously paranoia by itself is never wrong (though it can lead to wrong action), but I do wonder what...

Why is this not the standard?

Not trying to feed anything but I'll stop posting on this thread. Seems like too many misunderstandings and assumptions on everyone's part. :(

Why is this not the standard?

True for a lot of things, that. :) Huh? Who is that directed at? I think you are mistaking my analysis of JJ's writing style and the messages it does convey whether intended or not (i.e. my critique of what I have read of his writings) for a misunderstanding of his message. Those are very...
