    Comments on two bp/w packages?

The 1st kit can have a SS plate swapped in for $28 IIRC...that's one of the drop-down options.

Hog Regulator Combo or get something better ???

The mask thing is just individual fit. Most masks I've tried leak for me (I gots me a funky head). The HOG Predator I tried didn't seal well for me at all. The HOG technical mask, on the other hand, works great. For someone else it might be the other way around. I can't really add to the...

    Tap water rinsing & chlorine

Drinksfromtap, thanks for the extra details. That makes sense to my decidedly non drinking-water-treatment-engineer brain. Similar to how CO2 dissolved in H2O forms H2CO3, which then dissipates as my beer goes flat. I guess I don't need to say I'm not a chemist by trade. :)

    DFW Lake Divers?

No worries Ilook... If anyone wants to meet at CSSP this weekend, I'm game. :)

    Comments on two bp/w packages?

I can comment on the first to the limited extent that I walked into the Scubatoys retail shop intending to buy it, and wound up working with them to assemble a "custom" rig instead. Same plate, wing, and crotch strap, different tank straps and harness. I'm happy, but it's also the only...

    Tap water rinsing & chlorine

Most tap water (in the US at least) uses elemental chlorine. As in 80+ percent of all muni water supplies as I recall. They expose the water to a high partial pressure of chlorine and the chlorine dissolves into the water just like nitrogen into a diver's body on a dive. As a scuba diver might...

    A silly question about AOW

FWIW, there's about a 99.328% chance I will use SDI for the dry suit training. I spent some time today browsing/skimming SDI's books on a number of subjects. Also talked to an SDI (and PADI) instructor. I laid out where I am (noob), what I got (BP/W, delusions of cold water, etc.), what I...

    A silly question about AOW

That could well have been me. I said variations on that theme in two contexts, in two different ways. As a part of AOW, the idea of doing nitrox "in place of" one of the dives (which is what I heard the instructor say) seems like a waste. Not that nitrox is a waste, but doing it then/there...

    Divers Watch?

The rotating bezel is great for knowing how long your steaks have been cooking. You can wear them while washing dishes. They tend to have good high-visibility dials. I guess I don't understand the question. Seriously, I've worn a "dive watch" for a lot of years because they are very practical...

    A silly question about AOW

Interesting idea... I am going to be driving up to Wisconsin mid-September to attend a wedding. I wonder if I could find a shop or private instructor and add a 1-2 day detour on that trip to learn dry suits...I assume they are more common up there. As far as courses, the instructor I talked to...

    A silly question about AOW

A lot of good thoughts. My OW was PADI. I'm not tied to them though. I have been sampling local agency representatives to see if one is a better "fit" for me. In fact...embarrassing fact... I have a naui nitrox card heading my way because that seemed the cheapest way to taste test their...

    A silly question about AOW

That was offered as an option but a non-dive dive seems to miss the point.

    A silly question about AOW

My diving aspirations mainly involve colder water so dry suits are something I'd like to learn. Doesn't mean it needs to be part of AOW of course. I'm not committed to anything at this point, more exploring options.

    A silly question about AOW

I'm making plans to take an AOW course in October. I figure by that point I should have enough total-noob diving under my fins to appreciate the course, without letting anything get too entrenched. So here's my silly question... how do these combined courses handle diversity of student desires...

    Plano Texas new diver enthusiast

CSSP/Clear Springs Scuba Bark is where I did my OW and so far it's the only place I've scuba dived. Next question: (I'm a nosy one, aren't I?) Are you sure about those dates? :D I thought CSSP was only open Friday through Sunday. An amazing number of divers around the Dallas area, including...

    Is the paper logbook necessary?

I certainly hope electronic is good enough. In my day-to-day life I've gotten to the point where I have a Fujitsu SnapScan and in by preference any paper that comes to me goes into the scanner, then into a shredder, and is gone as quickly as possible. Of course I can't do that for official...

    Big Guy small mask?

FWIW... I have a big head (ahem) and have gone through racks of masks looking for good fit/seal. It can be a bit discouraging at times...in extreme cases my eyebrows end up going through the seal area on top while my nose is pressed against the bottom of the nose pocket unless I scrunch my face...

    why enter a cave

Hah... I've seen brightly colored MC vests referred to as "DOD compliant" ... didn't really connect what that meant. The whole "nanny military" approach (absurdly low speed limits on bases, etc.) has never made much sense to me, but I'm a lifelong outsider to that experience. I don't have the...

    what do i need

Don't know what to tell you about renting vs. buying (OK, in your shoes I'd rent unless I got active with a local club), but welcome.
