Why new divers looking into instructor and tech diving

Now look at aviation. The recommended - almost required - path for a would-be airline pilot goes like this: PPL (OW equiv, very loosely) Instrument (AOW) Commercial (required for any paying gig - requires 250 logged hours and age >= 18) Instructor At this point the pilot has 251 hours...

Why new divers looking into instructor and tech diving

Getting back to the original point.... There are many areas in life where relative beginners teaching to absolute beginners is considered a natural stage of your progression from beginner to expert. The idea is that you learn more by teaching a subject than by just applying it for yourself, and...

    Fear of uncontrolled ascent

Someone may have mentioned this but if so I didn't spot it.... Trim is a big factor. You can be 20 feet down, perfectly neutral, bobbing along as you breathe...but if your legs are pointed down when you start kicking, you will go up. As you rise the air in your BC expands, displacing more...

    Diver recovered after 13 years

Sigh... So if he had said 10 degrees it would have thrown you? I mean the density point is interesting but not germane to the rather silly tangent we are on.

    Diver recovered after 13 years

Since 4f clearly makes no sense (that is WELL below freezing) I assumed that doppler did what I usually do...use a unit of measure familiar to the audience. Units of measure are interchangeable so it is no big deal to switch to units familiar to your audience.

Is learning from PADI that bad?

To me that's no different than MacDannels also selling hamburgers. They do, and those hamburgers are central to their business, but the primary value is the familiar and consistent experience, the hamburger is just the medium through which that is expressed. I'm not a fan of McDonelds. If fact...

    Is it worth practising OOA?

You can get that with an air integrated computer.

    Is it worth practising OOA?

You can get some feel for it by turning off your valve and breathing out the trapped air in your hoses. On the reg I used on my training dives the air tapered off with the valve closed, giving some warning. With the regs I have now it seems to go from smooth breathing to zero mid-breath. I...

Red or Yellow or Orange DSMBs

From a boater perspective: No. International orange is deeply associated with PFDs, life rafts, and SOLAS-related items in general. As in SOLAS specifies International Orange for some safety gear. It's also a common color for regatta buoys so it isn't unambiguously "emergency" related. Yellow...

    OW pool training

Personally, I wouldn't prejudice myself about the OW dives based on the pool experience. They are totally different. Those kids (probably) won't be following you out to the ocean. Instead, assess whether you think you are ready for the open water. In other words, did the distractions in the...

Is learning from PADI that bad?

So let's say that a particular OW training class has quality, breadth, rigor, and a basic book/specialized calculator/blue vinyl bag, the use of all required equipment through the class, a checklist of skills that must be taught and standards for teaching them, lunch on the OW cert dive days...

Is learning from PADI that bad?

Really? I would think you would recognize it as a compliment. First, you aren't PADI. You are an instructor. Second, I didn't say that the quality is low. I said that quality isn't the value PADI is selling. PADI sells ubiquity and the idea that their cards are universally recognized. That is...

Is learning from PADI that bad?

I think PADI is like McDonalds or Denny's. The value they provide isn't quality per se. That's not to say they have an inferior product but their pitch isn't "we're the best." McDonnalds claims that you can go into any McDonals on the planet and have a consistent and familiar experience. PADI...

Hog Regulator Combo or get something better ???

I wonder if when I have more experience I'll agree with you. At this point I think your advice is a ham sandwich. Huh? OK, sorry, my brain is like that sometimes. The thing is, very few people are actually harmed in any measurable sense by being given a ham sandwich. On top of that, most...

Hog Regulator Combo or get something better ???

Yep. That's actually why I don't like cars I can't service myself. I got tired of having "techs" either fubar or half-ass my vehicles in truly mind-blowing ways. The last time I took a vehicle to a dealer for service, I did my routine post-service check and found the air filter housing not...

Is diving a good idea in my case?. Is that normal?

The problem isn't what is happening. Nobody especially likes water up their nose, or irritation of their sinuses. The problem comes in how you respond. I grew up playing in water, swimming pools and ocean/surf both, without ever using nose plugs or goggles. I can't tell you how many hours...

    Comments on two bp/w packages?

Them is also a noob whose attempts at math in this area should be distrusted or at least subject to heavy scrutiny before use. Just for the record. :)

    Comments on two bp/w packages?

What was their reasoning/how did they explain it? As far as I know the BC/Wing needs to be able to offset the normal variations in buoyancy for your configuration, and a little more. So they are anticipating 35-40lbs of variability in your total buoyancy (disregarding the wing). I'm not...

    Comments on two bp/w packages?

Not sure I'm following your buoyancy requirement reasoning. If your suit has 36lbs at the surface, and at max depth that drops to 26, that's 10lbs you need to be able to make back with the BC/Wing. I don't know if it is really 10lbs, that's a total guess. If your tank is -4 when full, and +2...
