Dive shop requirements for equipment purchases

Weird. So businesses can't own vehicles in those places? Or do they have corporate driver's licences?

    Use of the alternate regulator

This isn't from any personal experience, but I'd say, "don't"... 1) If you are feeling bad, you are probably not in top form as far as thinking and coordination, don't make life complicated. 2) From what I've read, most people reflexively gasp for air after vomiting. That's OK if you have a...

Dive shop requirements for equipment purchases

I don't think it is a legit requirement. I know it's not a PADI requirement or anything like that. It may be coming from their insurance but most likely it's just that they are trying to push you into signing up for the course. The only bit of gear I've purchased where the shop wanted to see a...

Yet another dry suit weight question...

The belt I own/don't currently use has a stainless buckle... I wasn't impressed with the plastic buckle I used during OW training.

Yet another dry suit weight question...

No, my hips and chest are larger than my waist. My genetic makeup seems to run to stumpy legs (29" inseam), normal arms (my reach is about 6', bicep circumference about 16".), relative shortness (I'm about 6' tall), all of which adds up to me weighing solidly over 200lbs when I was as fit as...

Yet another dry suit weight question...

 :) Is the DUI harness a good choice, or are you mostly paying for the name? I have a perfectly good weight belt that I got before I bought my HP100 and don't use. Right now I use no ditchable weight though I'm not opposed to the idea. As far as buy vs. rent.... the lake where I'll do my...

Yet another dry suit weight question...

Everyone - thank you. I'm going to pick up four 5lb weights @ the LDS to start (giving 32 total), and keep my eye on Craigslist et al for more.

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

I've been thinking about this, trying to figure out why it bothers me. I'm going to try to put it into words...may get it wrong but here goes.... Narcosis is one form of impairment. There are many forms of impairment you are likely to encounter while diving. Lack of sleep (boat leaves at 8AM...

Yet another dry suit weight question...

That's more what I had been expecting to hear. I was kinda thrown by the 40lbs estimate, before it started ratcheting down. And yes, a SWAG is what I'm looking for. I mainly want to make sure I beg/borrow/buy enough lead to actually dive the suit and learn to use it optimally. I don't want more...

Yet another dry suit weight question...

My search has turned up a bunch of these questions, all answered, but they always start from what is to me an unfamiliar point of reference because those divers are usually coming from a wet suit I don't have. So here's my frame of reference: I am OK weight wise in my SS BP/W, HP100, and 3mm...

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

Without disputing that... executing a pre-dive check correctly may be the thing you are at that moment incapable of doing, regardless of training. Humans make mistakes. That's why any even passably sane system has some sort of cross checking or error recovery involved. However, the flip side of...

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

The "advanced" use of a neti pot is "in through the nose, out through the mouth". Yeah...ugg. I'm the same re: water play. A lot of time playing in surf, in swimming pools, etc. and I've never actually panicked, even when tumbled repeatedly in rough surf. That doesn't mean I've always done the...

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

You might be beset by a pack of ravening dolphin-rapists. Or is that rapist-dolphins? Bad news either way. No amount of training or "good judgment" is going to get you out of that one unscathed.

A Question of LDS Purchasing Etiquette

I went to my preferred LDS the other day and told them I had just purchased a dry suit and needed some accessories. Obviously a dry suit is a big dollar item they would've loved to sell me. I got the same service I always get...e.g. they gave me the bag of talc for free. Of course I've been...

    Necklace Octo holder

The idea is that the square is passed through the circle (to attach the keeper to your d ring) and the octo mouthpiece is passed through the square. That's what I used during OW training...actually I asked how the octo should be held and the instructor disappeared into the shop and returned...

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

To the extent that we are all basically land mammals with similar anatomy I suspect they are all as close to universal as makes no difference. What isn't universal is our past experience. I'm not too surprised. Look up what people do with neti pots. Spitting is generally recommended through...

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

To the OP... no, you don't need to exceed the limit of your sangfroid to learn. Exceeding you sangfroid is not only exponentially riskier, but it can cause you to learn incorrect responses that happen to work (like bolting to the surface - maybe OK at 20 feet, not so hot at 40), thus setting...

    Question on drysuit and buoyancy

I can understand the vehemence. I have a dry suit book from SSI (picked it up at a used book store while researching suits). I have the manual (pamphlet) for SI Tech dry suit valves, titled "user's guide to optimized buoyancy control" I have an owner's manual for a dry suit. "WARNING: DO...

Got my OW cert, but SOB!

I guess there is a question of whether "no regulator in mouth" really equals "compromised breathing". Since I am comfortable about removing my own regulator and replacing it, I see it as no big deal PROVIDED I have the ability to reach a regulator easily...which the necklace provides. Last...

    Question on drysuit and buoyancy

Maybe the issue is that empty weight doesn't matter in the water, but buoyancy does. Empty weight is like cost...certainly important, but it doesn't have much to do with how much air you should put in your suit.
