Giant Black Sea Bass - Casino Point

I saw this same fish on two dives at the park last Friday (8/5) while visiting Catalina. Scared the crap out of me at first actually because it was so huge! The pictures and videos really don't show how big it looked underwater. Definitely a treat for my first diving visit to southern California...

    hp vs lp

It's basically a set of tradeoffs. LP Advantages: Cheaper, easier to get a good fill in some places HP Advantages: Smaller size and weight relative to the amount of air held I ended up going with HP tanks myself because it's no problem around here to get a good fill on HP tanks.

    hood ballooning up

I'm not sure if it's the origin of your problem, but my hood will fill with air if I'm breathing out through my nose into my mask. Because the mask is under the hood, air escaping out the top goes into the hood. Even with vents in my hood, I often have to look down or mash my palm onto the top...

    Thailand Recommendations

So today I booked roundtrip airfare to Bangkok for two weeks at the end of December/beginning of January. My partner's mother teaches at an American school in China (Shanghai). It's become somewhat of a tradition every couple years to travel with her somewhere for the holidays. Last time it was...

    Choosing a first dome

I recently got my first underwater DSLR setup (Canon T2i/550D in Nauticam housing). I'm starting out with macro since it's more useful for local conditions and creatures, but I'm planning to add a wide-angle setup soon for an upcoming trip. Based on everything I've read, I'm planning to...

Tank fills/dive sites at Coos Bay?

Give Eugene Skin Diver Supply in Eugene or South Beach Scuba in Newport a call. I'm not sure if there's a proper full service shop in Coos Bay. Sunset Sports in North Bend might do fills, but there's not a lot of info on their site and it looks like diving is just one of the beach activities...

    Uemis closing?

Having worked for a couple of failed businesses, I can say it's not unusual that employees who are responsible for day-to-day operations or product development to find out the business is closing shortly before the public is told. Sent from my Mazaa using Board Express

    questions about Catalina island

The reviews on TripAdvisor for Seaport Village Inn are pretty horrendous. Seaport Village Inn (Avalon, CA) - Inn Reviews - TripAdvisor It works for some people, but apparently not others.

    Truth Aquatics Liveaboard

I'm going to be traveling from Seattle for a family function but noticed the trip as cool opportunity for a few days beforehand. I suppose cancellation due to conditions or other extenuating circumstances is always a risk anyways. Thanks for the info everyone. Sent from my Mazaa using Board...

    Truth Aquatics Liveaboard

I'm looking at a 4-day Channel Islands liveaboard with Truth Aquatics where half the boat is a dive shop charter and half is sold by the operator directly. Most of the reviews I've come across have been very positive, but I'm concerned that several of the negative reviews have mentioned trips...

Opinion on what to do for cold water....

Save your money for the drysuit instead of buying a wetsuit you're only going to replace. For cold water diving, a crummy, used drysuit beats a nice wetsuit any day.

    Aquatica or Nauticam for T2i/550D

Yesterday I made some calls around to various dealers to get quotes and some advice on options. I ended up ordering the Nauticam this morning. I was pretty torn between the two housings. Based on everything I've heard, they both seemed like great options. However, the only dealer I was...

    Buddy separation at depth

This actually happened to me during one of my AOW dives. We were heading up to do a mid-water safety stop with no visual reference in relatively low visibility and moderate current. Both my buddy and I were having trouble staying in place, having never actually done a mid-water safety stop...

    Aquatica or Nauticam for T2i/550D

MagnaBoxer, can you elaborate a bit on the issue of availability of dome ports? Also, it sounds like I need to call around a bit to get a quote on a package deal with the housing, port(s) and a strobe setup. I noticed Reef doesn't really mention anything about this on their site. Backscatter...

    Aquatica or Nauticam for T2i/550D

I'm looking to get a housing for my T2i/550D. My G12 is a great little camera, but I miss the versatility and image quality of my DSLR that I use frequently above water. I've narrowed my options down to the Aquatica AT2i or Nauticam NA-550D. Does anybody have positive or negative experiences...

    dSLR Upgrade Decisions

My understanding is that the 60D has not sold particularly well because it's not all that different from the T2i and T3i yet costs more. Here is a link that compares the two. Not a whole lot of difference for underwater shooting really. You can also use the site to compare other cameras too...

    Advice for first computer purchase

It's been working fine for me on 64-bit Windows 7. I also had to download the 64-bit USB driver from Oceanic's site.

G12 has come back to life, now what?

Well, you all were right. The camera only lasted a few days before conking out completely. When I'd power it on, the lens would only partially extend without the camera actually starting. I sent it off to Canon a couple weeks ago. They officially pronounced it dead and unrepairable but they're...

    Puerto Vallarta: Vallarta Under Sea

I did some dives in January with PVScuba, but we were on a Vallarta Undersea boat. The folks from both operations seemed knowledgable, friendly, organized, etc. Both are smaller operations that provide a more personal experience.

    For Folks with poor vision

I did this skill in my open water class too. However, for those who wore contacts the instructor allowed us to keep our eyes closed the whole time. The instructor just grabbed my hand, lead me over to where the mask was (probably 25ft or so), picked it up and stuck it in my hand. I then put it...
