Thick Wetsuit and Boots: How should they go together?

When I still dove wet in a 7mm, I pulled the cuff of the suit over the boots but my suit had ankle zippers to help. To me, it sounds like her suit just isn't a very good fit. Sent from my SGH-i917 using Board Express

    HP steel tank capacity

The size of the tank in cubic feet refers to the amount of air in the tank if it were expanded out to 1 ATA (about 14.7 psi). So HP 80 @ 3442 psi holds the same amount of air as an AL 80 @ 3000 psi. If you fill an HP 80 to 2400 psi, 80 cuft x (2400 / 3442) = 56 cuft or to 2640 psi (+...

    Flooded G11

When this happened to me, I sent my camera off to Canon's repair facility. After they determined it was not repairable due to water damage, I was able to buy another G12 from them at a dramatic discount (about half price if I remember correctly). I was also given the option to upgrade to an SLR...

Canon Vs. Nikon... let the debate start...

I was looking around at full-frame options the other day too and noticed that my local camera shop doesn't even list the D700 anymore online. B&H lists it but it's "temporarily unavailable". Hmmm.

    Wetsuit for cold water diving

A crappy, used drysuit is still warmer than a new, really nice wetsuit.

Diving the Crater Lake in Oregon?

Oregon PBS had a cool program on this not too long ago. It's available online: Oregon Field Guide — Diving Crater Lake · Oregon Public Broadcasting.

How did you choose your con ed instructors?

After deciding I wanted to learn to dive, I posted something on Facebook asking my friends for recommendations. I think about 4 people responded. Three of them recommended a local shop chain. One recommended a personal friend who was a local instructor. I ended up going with the shop because the...

What's the hardest class you have taken, and what made it hard?

I've only taken a few classes--OW, AOW, Nitrox all from the same PADI instructor, drysuit informally without a card from a NAUI instructor, and UTD Essentials. I'll be a bit different from those who've already posted and say for me the hardest was OW. I went in expecting it to be really easy...

Avoiding the worst of "cattle boat" diving

My partner and I just got back from a 2 week trip to Thailand. We were mainly there to spend time with non-diving family, but had planned to do about 3 or 4 days of diving in Ko Lanta too. I only ended up doing one day (and he only did 2) because of a combination of bad weather and me coming...

XZ-1 ... IMO, a poor choice for an underwater camera

My buddy has this camera with a Sea&Sea YS-02 strobe and loves it, but he also has the Nauticam housing. It exposes all camera controls and has better ergonomics, but costs quite a bit more.

    Edmonds under construction?

I've heard the parking lot construction is finished but haven't verified it myself personally. For night dives, you need to call the city (parks department, I think) a few days ahead of time, but supposedly if you're not staying past 10pm (when the parking lot closes) no permit is required. More...

    making jump to DSLR

I have a T2i in the Nauticam housing. One big advantage of that housing is that the controls on the housing work around the single control dial quite well. There's a toggle switch next to the shutter lever and the control dial knob that will toggle between shutter speed and aperture in manual...

Am I overdoing it starting out?

+1 on skipping the ABS octo. It's the only gear I regret buying. I should have sprung for the Legend octo at the time. To the shop's credit, they were good guys trying to save me money by not pushing more expensive equipment when I was on the fence. When I went to buy a replacement for it about...

Trouble doffing SiTech Glove Lock QCP

The other night I twisted the glove ring on and off about 10 times in a row to help break it in. For the dive we went on last night, they went on and came off much, much easier.

Trouble doffing SiTech Glove Lock QCP

I'd been thinking about transitioning to dry gloves for a while. After diving Clear Lake, Oregon last weekend with a balmy 38F water temperature, it reminded me that I really didn't want to go another winter with wet gloves. I just picked up two sets of the SiTech Glove Lock QCP dry glove...

Problems w DSLR not autofocusing under low vis

Have you considered getting a proper focus light? I use an Inon LE 550W. It's pretty basic (just one level on/off, no special red LED, takes standard AA batteries), but works well for my local conditions. The L&M Sola lights and many in the iTorch line look pretty nice too. When I'm not using...

    Catalina Island

I just got back from Catalina earlier this month after spending 2 days diving the park. We were supposed to do a day on a boat too, but it was canceled since there weren't enough people signed up. Either way, the park was awesome! We wouldn't have seen the giant sea bass on the second day had...

    Aquanauts

I dove with this shop (Aquanauts in Puerto Morelos) last December. It was just two boat dives in one day of diving. Both dives were quite shallow (first about 45ft, second about 35ft), but were drift dives. I could be wrong, but my impression was that all the interesting diving was offshore and...
