Oceanic VT Pro require repair, or okay to use as is?

On these computers, the actual computer and surrounding case/band (boot) are separate parts. It's hard for me to tell if the part that broke came from the boot or the computer itself, but it looks like the boot. If so, you could just buy a DSS bungee boot for $20 and pop the computer into it.

Help a newbie with BC direction...please?

With regard to wing size, you need to have enough lift to keep your head out of the water at the surface with you wearing it, enough to float the entire rig on the surface without you in it and enough at depth to make up for any loss of buoyancy typically due to exposure suit compression. The...

    Geo 2.0 and VT4 algorithms

I just wanted to update the thread with the latest on my VT4 troubles. I called Oceanic a couple weeks ago to see what the latest was since I'd sent the computer in for service about a month ago. They apologized for it taking so long, but told me they needed to follow up with Pelagic (a separate...

    Bubble models for recreational profiles

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, so mods please move if this would fit better elsewhere. I just finished reading Powell's Deco for Divers. Interesting read with lots of good information, although it could use a second edition with some better editing for sure. It seems like...

what is the evidence for the long compartment?

Not necessarily. When Aloha Airlines Flight 243 had an explosive decompression at 24,000 ft and lost a good sized chunk of its roof, only one person died (a flight attendant who was horrifically sucked out of the plane) although several others were injured likely with DCS.

    Shearwater Battery Question

Although the manual doesn't actively discourage the use of alkalines for cold water, it does specifically recommend 1.5V photo lithium and 3.7V rechargeable Li-ion batteries for colder conditions. I've had decent luck with the 1.2V NiMH Eneloop rechargeables, but I already own a ton for my...

    Santi E Motion Drysuit

Can you talk a little bit more about why you're switching from the Espace to the E.motion? I've been reading about both of these suits (and the E.Lite) online. Other than being about 25% lighter, it's not clear to me what the other differences are. Of course, Santi's marketing materials make all...

    Geo 2.0 and VT4 algorithms

I realized I never came back to tell the rest of the story. After I got back from Bonaire I called Oceanic and they told me to send it in. I don't recall how long it was gone for but I want to say it was a couple weeks. I didn't get any notice that it was done or being sent back. It just...

    World Phone Options?

I'd also recommend what was said above about Google Voice. Running Skype over Wifi is pretty effective too when you need to call home (as opposed to home calling you in an emergency). Many of Verizon's smartphones also have a quadband GSM radio and a SIM in them solely for international...

    Hood Canal, Recommendations?

Sund Rock is just north of Hoodsport. There are 2 walls that usually have GPOs and wolfeels that are a short surface swim from the entry. There's a parking lot with a portable toilet and an easy entry on private property. You have to pay about $15 (cheaper on weekdays) for access at Hoodsport n...

6 inch or 8 inch Dome port?

For rectilinear wide-angle you want the biggest dome you can get in order to have the corners in focus. You'll also probably need a diopter of some sort since the minimum focusing distance on that lens is 28cm/11in.

    Dome Port Advice - 4, 6, or 8? Help!

I was facing a similar decision a while back when adding wide angle to my setup (T2i in Nauticam housing). What made me choose the small dome was seeing both a 100mm (about 4 inch) and a 200mm (about 8 inch) dome in person at Optical Ocean Sales. Pictures online do not do justice to the actual...

Upgrading from Canon S90 to DSLR or Mirrorless

Moving up from a point and shoot to a DSLR or mirrorless setup is generally going to be expensive. If you're committed though, you can build a system up gradually and spread those costs out over time as your skills and needs grow. For example, when I moved from a G12 w/ Canon housing to a T2i w/...

Need an extra undergarment layer under my drysuit

I have a 7mm Bare hood that came with my drysuit. It's ok but not great. I have considered one of those Otter Bay helmet hoods. They're supposed to be amazing. Sent from my Nokia Lumia 920 using Board Express

Need an extra undergarment layer under my drysuit

Usually about an hour, recreational profiles and primarily focused on taking photos (i.e., not moving a whole bunch). I have probably an average amount of cold tolerance, although my hands get cold easily in or out of the water. For the shell suit, I expect to end up in something like the Halo...

Need an extra undergarment layer under my drysuit

That's useful feedback everybody. I'm thinking getting a warmer base layer such as the fourth element xerotherm or kam gear is my best option for now. I should be able to use those with a heavier outer garment when I move to a shell suit. I'm still evaluating options wrt a new drysuit. So this...

    Bonaire Trip Report and Photos

I love all the fish identification comments. At some point, I tried staring at the faded chart outside of BD&A, but it was pretty overwhelming with all the variety of fish in Bonaire. We usually resorted to vague descriptions and making up our own names for what we saw. For example, "hummingbird...

    Lens choice: Fisheye vs. rectilinear?

A fisheye is more of a novelty above water because there are lots of straight lines distorted by the fisheye effect. Underwater, straight lines are much less common--two big exceptions being shipwrecks and pilings. However, even in these cases, the fisheye effect just doesn't seem to bother...

    SMBs recommendation

The one that's $13.99 is a "safety sausage". Notably, it's a fully closed one without an overpressure valve. If you overinflate at depth, it'll burst as it ascends and the air inside expands. Generally these kinds are only useful for inflation once you're already at the surface in order to get...
