Yeah, I wish I had extra time to do some diving - would have been curious to see the reefs! I think the water temperature was around 80F. Everybody snorkeled in just rashguards and bathings suits and were comfortable.
Instead of an American Thanksgiving, I decided to branch out and do something different for the holiday! I spent a week on the island of Dominica, snorkeling with sperm whales.
Why Dominica?
Dominica is considered the best place in the world to swim with sperm whales, due to a resident pod of...
Dominica still seems to be in rough shape. All the trees had no canopy. A lot of homes and businesses along the water in Roseau seemed either permanently destroyed and/or not reopening anytime soon. It seemed very quiet when I was there.
I stopped by Castle Comfort, it had a few rooms open for...
Thai Paradise Gains Reputation as ‘Death Island’
I worked on Koh Tao for a couple months in 2012 and enjoyed my time there, but even then its reputation was mixed.
I will be there next month (11/18-24) for a sperm whale snorkeling trip, so while I won't be able to speak to the diving, I can at least report back on the island itself.
1. I never used the shower.
2. Everybody on board (or, at least the men, which were the majority) did not shower until the end of the trip. So if you do want to shower, you should have no problem.
3. There are 3 heads, so never any issues.
Hey folks,
I'm headed out with Blackbeard's in three weeks, something I am very excited about. I am bringing my DSLR housing rig, so I was just curious:
-What lenses would one recommend? Fisheye, rectilinear wide-angle, macro?
-Is there any space to store my camera gear, or will it live in my...
I am always bad at estimating these things, but visibility was probably in the 15-30ft range. Water temps were in the low 70s, which we were told was warmer than usual; frequently it is in the 60s. I wore a 7mm wetsuit with hood, gloves and boots.
I’m glad your reading comprehension skills are up to par.
There are plenty of threads on SB in regards to snorkeling/freediving excursions with sharks, manatees, seals and other marine animals. Until somebody creates SnorkelBoard, this is the logical place for such a report.
$350. For comparison, Snappa (also in RI) is $225 and SD Expeditions (in San Diego) is $400.
When I went out with Snappa, there were a dozen customers on the boat. With Pelagic, I was one of six customers (and that's their max). That was a difference worth paying for, IMHO.
Why Rhode Island for shark diving?
I absolutely love sharks, and thus have been interested in diving with blue and shortfin mako sharks. There are couple spots around the world to potentially dive/snorkel with blues and makos: Azores, Cabo San Lucas (Mexico), Montauk (NY), New Zealand, Rhode...
If you don't want a BP/W set-up, I've taken my Zeagle Stiletto to Europe and Asia, dove in everything from 36 degrees F and up, always been a pleasure and never had any issues. Highly recommend.
I'm going to pop in here and recommend Portsmouth Scuba if you want to dive on the NH coast (including Isles of Shoals, lots of seals!), and Waterfront Diving in Burlington, VT if you ever want to dive some awesome wrecks in Lake Champlain.
Just wanted to update this and say that I migrated to a DryLock system this year for my Canon 5D Mark III. I've been using the Ikelite FL system for years, and based off of that, DL is a huge improvement. Highly recommend.
